Old Photograph East High Street Forfar Scotland

Old photograph of shops, houses and people on East High Street in Forfar, Angus, Scotland. The Soutars of Forfar, shoemakers, were renowned for their high-quality brogues, which was the main trade until the middle of the 18th century. The tanning process, with skins hanging over structures, gave the area of the modern Abbeygate Shopping Centre its old name. Hand loom weaving of coarse linen also grew rapidly during this time.
