Old Photograph Baptist Church Bellshill Scotland

Old photograph of the Baptist Church in Bellshill, Glasgow, Scotland. The architect was Andrew Black, born in 1862 in Motherwell, the son of David Black, a Joiner and his wife Catherine Turpie. He was articled to John Hutchison in 1877 and remained with him for fifteen years, latterly as chief assistant. He was a fine draughtsman and has a place in history as an influential teacher of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Towards the end of his time at Hutchison's he was largely responsible for the design of Wylie Hill's department store on Buchanan Street. He set up his own practice in Galashiels in 1891, and remained there until joining Robert Miller in partnership in Glasgow in 1899. Black and Miller were both admitted FRIBA on 11 June 1906, their proposers being John Keppie, Horation Kelson Bromhead and C J MacLean. In their Gothic work the influence of Rowan's free neo-perpendicular was marked. Black died on 20 December 1927. He was unmarried. He was survived by his sister, Jessie Black who was also unmarried.
