Old Photograph Post Office Tomnahurich Street Inverness Scotland
Old photograph of the Post Office on Tomnahurich Street in Inverness, Scotland. Tomnahurich is a name meaning hill of the yews. Tomnahurich Hill is a prominent landmark located a mile southwest of Inverness town centre. It rises steeply to 221 feet between Glenurquhart Road and the Caledonian Canal. Geologically, this is an excellent example of an esker, deposited under an ancient ice-sheet. Since the mid 19th century the hill at the centre of a cemetery, but it is said that the seer Thomas the Rhymer, born 1220, died 1297, lies here along with his men and white horses, ready to rise again and save Scotland in her hour of need. Folklore also suggests that the Fairy Queen holds court here.
