Tour Scotland Video Of Old Photographs Of Scalpay Outer Hebrides
Tour Scotland travel Blog video of old photographs of Scalpay, Scottish Gaelic: Sgalpaigh or Sgalpaigh na Hearadh, an island in the Outer Hebrides. Following his defeat at the Battle of Culloden, Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, sought refuge on Scalpay. He hid in a cave and at the home of a local tacksman (land manager) before making his escape to Skye with the help of Flora MacDonald. In 1549, the island was described as a "fair hunting forest" belonging to Maclean of Duart. By the 18th century, it was held by a tenant of Sir Alexander Macdonald. The vast majority of the locals in Scalpay are Protestants. Scalpay is home to many Gaelic singers and psalm precentors. Despite the proximity of the island to Harris, it was only in 1997 that the Scalpay Bridge was opened.
