Scottish Gaelic: Coinmheadh, Laurencekirk is a small town in the historic county of Kincardineshire, just off the A90 Dundee to Aberdeen main road which it bypassed in 1985. It is administered as part of Aberdeenshire. Laurencekirk was, in the past, known for making snuff boxes with a special type of airtight hinge, known as a Laurencekirk hinge, invented by James Sandy. Thomas Ruddiman served as the parish schoolmaster from 1695 to 1700. Francis Garden, Lord Gardenstone, born 1721, died 1793, was the founder of Laurencekirk.
