Tour Scotland travel video of the Archibald MacDougall and his wife Isobel Stewart memorial stained glass window in the Parish Church in Kenmore on ancestry visit to Highland Perthshire, Scotland. Archibald farmed on the South side of Loch Tay, and this features, at the foot of the window with scenes of farming life. MacDougall is Scottish surname which is an anglicized form of the Old Gaelic " MacDubhghaill ", a patronymic from the male given name Dubhghall, composed of the elements " dubh ", black, dark, and " gall ", stranger. This was frequently used as a byname for Scandinavians, in particular to distinguish the darker haired Danes from fair haired Norwegians. The McDougall clan are descended from one, Dugall, eldest son of Somerled of the Isles, and were described as " one of the most unobtrusive and honoured families in Scotland ". In the process of anglicization " MacDhubhghaill " acquired many variant spellings including: McDugal, McDougal, McDowall, McDuall, McDool, McCool and McCole. Early recordings of the surname include: Robert M'Kowele, Lord of Karsnelohe in Ayrshire in 1370; Fergus Macdowylle in Roxburghshire, in 1374; Duncan MacCoull of Lorn, justice of the peace for Argyllshire in 1610, and Ewin M'Dougall of Dunaverty, Argyllshire, in 1647.
