Old Travel Blog Photograph Hanover Street Stranraer Scotland

Old travel Blog photograph of shops, vintage cars and people on Hanover Street in Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Stranraer lies on the shores of Loch Ryan, on the northern side of the isthmus joining the Rhins of Galloway to the mainland. David Broadfoot was born in Stranraer on 21 July 1899. He was Radio Officer on the MV Princess Victoria, which sank in 1953 in the North Channel in the worst maritime disaster in United Kingdom waters since World War II. Broadfoot remained at his post while the ship was sinking, sending messages to shore stations to enable them to locate the ship. He was posthumously awarded the George Cross, the highest award for bravery to British civilians. He was awarded the George Cross for his courage. His grandchildren eventually donated his George Cross to the Stranraer town museum, where it is now on display along with other memorabilia from the sinking. David died on 31 January 1953. Blog post of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to travel and visit one day.
