Old Photograph Cinema Muirend Glasgow Scotland

Old photograph of the Cinema in Muirend, on the Southside of the city of Glasgow, Scotland. Designed by architect William Beresford Inglis it opened on 2nd October 1933. A year after opening it was taken over by Associated British Cinemas who operated for the remainder of its life, apart from the last couple of years when the Cannon Group took over. It was tripled in 1982 and closed in October 2001. Muirend is largely residential in character, although there are many shops/businesses situated along Clarkston Road. These include a Sainsburys supermarket, Newsagents, Hairdressers, Estate Agents, Cafes and many others. Adjacent to the Supermarket until its closure was the Cinema; this local landmark was the last traditional suburban picture house on the Southside. Although the rest of the building was demolished to make way for residential flats, the facade of the Cinema was preserved and has been incorporated into the new development.
