Tour Scotland self catering holiday cottage recommendations on the Isle of Barra, Outer Hebrides, Scotland.
Tangasdale Beach Cottage on the Isle of Barra is situated in one of the most idyllic locations in Britain. It is perched on the edge of the sea, facing West, overlooking the Atlantic ocean. This delightful cottage is tastefully furnished and well equipped throughout. It provides the most incredible sea views from all aspects; the sunsets are spectacular! The lovely white sandy beach and adjoining rocky cove are accessed directly from the property. The Isle of Barra is considered by many to be the most beautiful small island in Britain. Its tranquillity, unique culture and fascinating history combined with the wealth of activities available ensure a memorable holiday for all. Take a guided boat trip from Castlebay port and down to Mingulay at the southern end of the Outer Hebrides. Basking sharks, minkie whales, dolphins, seals and an incredible number of sea birds, including the elusive puffin, can be seen in their natural habitat, amidst the magnificent cliffs. Boats are also available for charter, offering the opportunity for a deserted island barbecue or an exhilarating trip around the tiny uninhabited islands. Sea anglers can experience fishing in the rich waters of the Minch. Trout fishing is also available on the island. Historical sites and places of interest abound. The medieval castle of Kisimul, seat of the Clan MacNeil of Barra, is one of the first landmarks one sees on arrival, situated on a small rocky island just 200 yards from Castlebay port. Its imposing, fairytale setting and access only by small boat makes for a memorable visit. Ancient standing stones, Neolithic sites and prehistoric settlements offer an insight into the rich and varied history of this fascinating island. Sea kayaking trips, cycling, walking, swimming, exploring the little rock pools, or just watching the sunset over the turquoise Atlantic ocean at the end of a perfect Hebridean island day all contribute to the unique charm of this totally unspoilt and incomparable island.
Taigh Ciorstaidh is a lovely, renovated croft house situated on the East side of Barra with stunning views across Loch Na Obe to the Sound of Barra and Eriskay. It is located approximately 4 miles from Castlebay and 3 miles from the cockle strand of the airport. The accommodation consists of 4 bedrooms, living room, kitchen and shower room. The upper floor has been completely renovated in 2010 and consists of one twin and one single bedroom (spare bed below single bed). On the ground floor there is a large family room with a double and single bed. The second bedroom on the ground floor has bunkbeds with a skylight. The living room contains of two 2 seater sofas, one of which is a sofa-bed. It has a television and DVD player. There is a pine fitted kitchen with microwave, washing machine and tumble dryer. It is a sunny, cosy cottage, with night storage heating throughout and an electric fire in the living room. It is a no smoking home, where pets are welcome.
Harbour Cottage is a distinctive 3-bedroomed detached cottage providing a feeling of comfort without the claustrophobia and offering plenty of space to take off your walking boots and not be scared to lounge about. Most of our guests fall in love with the cottage and our visitors' book is overflowing with kind comments. Accommodation consists of a lounge, a fully equipped kitchen with cooker, refrigerator, automatic washing machine and microwave. There is no television. Upstairs there is a cosy sun lounge, with stunning views across land and sea, one double bedroom, one twin bedroom and one bedroom with a double and a single bed. The bedrooms have sloping roofs. Fittings are new and of good quality. The bathroom is located downstairs. Heating is provided by a coal fire as well as storage and panel heating throughout. All linen and towels are provided free of charge. Coal is not provided. Harbour Cottage in not fenced in and there may be cattle around the house at times. Access is by a fairly steep slope (about 100 yards with an incline of roughly 1 in 6, which may not be suitable for all.
South Bank was formerly a traditional Black House, with walls that are four foot thick in places, it offers a very distinctive holiday home for those who like basic but cosy accommodation. There is a small double bedroom, a bathroom with bath and shower and a room comprising kitchen/lounge/diner. The house is most suited to couples, but there is a sofa bed and a futon in the living room to accommodate extra guests. The kitchen area has an electric cooker, automatic washing machine, refrigerator and microwave. There is a bath and a shower unit. Heating is provided by a coal fire and electric heaters. All linen and towels are provided free of charge. Please note that there is no television in the cottage.
