Old Photograph Hightae Scotland

Old photograph of cottages and houses in Hightae village near Lochmaben, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. In the early 14th century, Robert the Bruce founded the Royal Four Towns of Hightae, Heck, Greenhill, and Smallholm for their loyalty to him following the murder of the Comyn. Bruce granted parcels of land to his veteran soldiers, known as " King's Kindly Tenants," in Hightae and the other towns. They held their land directly from the monarch and were given special rights, including access to common lands, woods, and water. These unique rights, including fishing on the River Annan, were maintained for centuries. In exchange, the tenants were required to provide supplies and garrisons for Lochmaben Castle when the king or his representatives were in residence.
