Old photograph of children in Benslie near Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. This village, previously known as Benislay, Beinslay, Bainsley, Bensley, Benslee and Bendslee is situated next to Benslie wood. Plagues were common in this area in the 18th and 19th centuries with outbreaks of small pox in 1791, cholera in 1832 and scarlet fever in 1837. Sentinels were placed at points on the roads to stop anyone entering or leaving the effected areas.
