Old Photograph Main Street Methil Fife Scotland

Old photograph of shops, people and buildings on the Main Street in Methil, Fife, Scotland. The town was first recorded as " Methkil " and was owned by the Bishop of St Andrews. The original settlement was located inland, where corn and cloth mills operated. By the 17th century, Methil had a stone harbour for exporting coal and salt, linked to local mines. Once established as a burgh of barony, Methil gained the right to hold markets and fairs.
