Old Photograph Fishing Boat Harbour Stromness Orkney Islands Scotland

Old photograph of a fishing boat in the harbour in Stromness, Orkney Islands, Scotland. Stromness's history is deeply intertwined with its strategic location as a sheltered harbor, making it a vital port for various maritime activities throughout its existence. Originally named "Hamnavoe" by the Vikings, meaning "haven bay," the town flourished as a settlement from the 16th century onwards, particularly as a stopover for ships traveling between Europe and the New World. The Hudson's Bay Company, in particular, made Stromness a crucial port of call for their ships bound for Canada.
