Old Photographs Golf Course Lamlash Island Of Arran Scotland

Old photograph of the golf course by Lamlash on the Island of Arran, Scotland. Willie Fernie the head green keeper at Troon, who won the British Open in 1883 at Musselburgh, planned a nine hole layout here, which was carried out early in 1890. In 1896 because Fernie was in France, it was decided to contact William Auchterlonie of St Andrews, Fife, who was just 26 years of age, with a view to planning an 18 hole course. William had won the 1893 Open Championship at the age of 21 years and 25 days and he remains the second youngest Open Champion. The new course was opened on the 12th June 1897 when Fernie and Auchterlonie played an exhibition match.
