Old photograph of farm workers near Forfar, Angus, Scotland. Before the widespread use of machinery, the employment of farm workers was entirely governed by the " feeing " system. Twice a year, at statutory fairs or markets (such as the St Thomas' or feeing markets in neighbouring towns like Arbroath), farm workers would gather to negotiate their next six-month or twelve month contracts with local tenant farmers
