Macauslan, Macausland, Macauselan, Macauslane, Macauslin, Maccaslane, Maccausland, Macaslan, Macasland, Maccasland, Macaslin, Maccasline: means " son of Absalon." The first use of the surname as recorded appears to be Absalon, son of Macbed, or Macbethe, a churchman, to whom a charter of the island called Clarines, Clarinch in Loch Lomond, later the gathering place of Clan Buchanan was granted by Maldoun or Maldouen, third earl of Lennox, in 1225.
