Old photograph of Abbey Bridge which spans the River Jed in Jedburgh, Borders, Scotland. The existing stone Abbey Bridge dates from the middle of the 19th century and features three segmental arches, with the central arch being the widest. It replaced older crossings in the area. The bridge takes its name from the adjacent Jedburgh Abbey, a major historic site founded in 1138 by King David I for Augustinian canons. The abbey was strategically important and wealthy, which made it a frequent target during the centuries of border warfare between Scotland and England.
