Old Photograph South Harbour Fair Isle Scotland

Old photograph of the harbour, lighthouse and cottages on South Fair Isle, Scotland. The Fair Isle South Lighthouse was the work of David A. Stevenson, born 1854, died 1938, and Charles Stevenson, born 1855, died 1950, and first illuminated in 1892. The lighthouse was subject to German bombing on two occasions during World War II; the first attack killed the wife of an Assistant Keeper while the second killed the wife and daughter of the Principal Keeper, and a soldier, as well as destroying the lighthouse keepers' cottages. Fair Isle is an island in northern Scotland, lying around halfway between mainland Shetland and the Orkney islands. Blog post of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
