Old Photograph Birgham Scotland
Old photograph of a shop, houses and cottages in Birgham, Borders Scotland. A Scottish a village in the Berwickshire, parish of Eccles, near Coldstream and the River Tweed. Birgham is close to Ednam, Kelso, Lempitlaw, Leitholm and Sprouston as well as Carham and Wark. Birgham is celebrated as having been the place where several important affairs, were transacted. In 1188 the Embassadors of King Henry II of England met William the Lion of Scotland here to arrange some matters connected with the Holy Wars. On the 17th March 1290 the community of Scotland met here, and expressed their approbation of the intended marriage of Edward I of England, with Margaret of Scotland upon condition of Edward’s giving security for certain matters relating to the state of this country. This place was originally called Brigham, from a bridge that is supposed to have joined the two countries here.
