Dundee's docks were always busy with whaling ships, large vessels bringing various cargos, coals from Newcastle, general goods from London and Liverpool, England, as well as thousands of tons of jute and the catches of the fishing and whaling fleets. After the long voyage from India and what is today known as Bangladesh, sailing ships had to undergo repairs and re-painting, which also provided work for Dundee's labour. Shipbuilding was also a major industry in the city at the time.
