The bridge's central main span is 3,301 feet long, its two side spans are each 1,339 feet long, and the approach viaducts are 827 feet on the north side and 1,437 feet on the south side. At a total length of 8,241 feet, it was the longest suspension bridge span outside the United States and the fourth longest span in the world at the time of its construction. The bridge comprises 39,000 tonnes of steel and 115,000 cubic metres of concrete. The towers reach 512 feet above mean water level. Its width comprises a dual carriageway road with two lanes in each direction bounded by cycle/footpaths on each side.
