Following the Scottish Reformation, Sir Thomas MacLellan of Bombie, the Provost of Kirkcudbright, acquired the site of a dissolved Franciscan Greyfriars monastery in 1569. Rather than leaving the redundant stone to waste, he dismantled most of the monastery to reuse its materials for his personal residence. Construction began around 1577, with the main structure completed by 1582. The building was grand enough that in 1587, Sir Thomas entertained King James VI at the property. Though built to exhibit the supreme influence of Clan MacLellan, the family's fortunes quickly reversed. Sir Thomas's descendant, Robert MacLellan, was created the first Lord Kirkcudbright in 1633 but famously squandered much of the family's wealth during military operations in Ireland. The castle changed hands again in 1782 when it was purchased by the Earl of Selkirk. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
