The castle was built over an ancient Norse homestead known in Viking history. During a dispute over a church tax known as Peter's Pence, Harald Maddadsson, the Norse Earl of Caithness and Orkney, besieged the stronghold. Upon capturing the site, the Earl brutally mutilated Bishop John of Caithness by cutting out his tongue and gouging out his eyes. The earliest formal written mention of the stone fortress appears in 1328, detailing a fee owed for maintaining the castle while the bishopric was vacant. In 1544 George Sinclair, the 4th Earl of Caithness, violently seized the castle Castle. This was likely a preemptive political move to prevent rival Gordon family interests from gaining a foothold in the local bishopric. Despite the tension, the Earl of Caithness was formally appointed as the castle's constable in 1557. For a period, it was also designated as a royal castle. The final record of a bishop residing at the property dates to 1566.
