Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish novelist and travel writer, stayed at Fishers Hotel in Pitlochry in June 1881 with his wife Fanny and his mother. They then moved to Kinnaird Cottage in Moulin. Here Stevenson worked on the short stories, Thrawn Janet, The Merry Men, and The Body Snatcher. The village of Moulin developed around the Black Castle of Moulin, built in 1326, and was a busy community before a 1727 rerouting of the military road led to its decline. Key landmarks include the Moulin Inn, dating to 1695. Moulin was also an important Iron Age Pictish settlement.
