Winter Commando Memorial With Music By Spean Bridge On Visit To The Highlands Scotland

Located around a mile from Spean Bridge village, it overlooks the training areas of the Commando Training Depot established in 1942 at Achnacarry Castle. Unveiled in 1952 by the Queen Mother, it has become one of the United Kingdom's best known monuments, both as a war memorial and as a tourist attraction. Brigadier Simon Christopher Joseph Fraser, 15th Lord Lovat and 4th Baron Lovat, born on 9 July 1911 in Beaufort Castle, died 16 March 1995 in Beauly, was the 25th Chief of the Clan Fraser of Lovat and a prominent British Commando during the Second World War. His friends called him Shimi Lovat, an anglicised version of his name in the Scottish Gaelic language. During the Sword landings, on June 6, 1944, D-Day of the invasion, Lord Lovat reputedly waded ashore wearing a white jumper under his battledress, with “ Lovat ” inscribed into the collar, while armed with a “ short barreled U.S. Army carbine ” presumably an M1 Carbine. Lord Lovat instructed his personal piper, Bill Millin, to pipe the commandos ashore, in defiance of specific orders not to allow such an action in battle. When Private Millin demurred, citing the regulations, he recalled later, Lord Lovat replied: “ Ah, but that’s the English War Office.
