The Forth Railway Bridge, the world’s first major steel bridge, with its gigantic girder spans of 1710 feet ranks as one of the great feats of engineering. It was begun in 1883 and formally completed on 4th of March 1890 when HRH Edward Prince of Wales tapped into place a ‘golden’ rivet. The Forth Road Bridge is a suspension bridge which opened in 1964, spans the Firth of Forth; connecting the capital city Edinburgh, at South Queensferry, to Fife, at North Queensferry.
