October 8th photograph of Kinfauns Castle which stands high on a slope overlooking the River Tay, near Perth, Scotland. This Scottish castle was designed by Robert Smirke and built between 1822 and 1826 by Lord Gray on the site of a medieval stronghold.

The main function of the Scottish castle was defensive, to protect the laird and his family from their enemies, in as comfortable surroundings as possible; but the castle also served as the centre of administration of the laird's lands, where tenure, economy and trade were controlled.
