Erected by Janet McNab, in affectionate memory of her grandparents, Alexander Lowrie, and his wife, Janet Mason, also their daughters, Margaret Vannet and Maria Chapman, also their son-in-law Peter Vannet, also brothers James and Charles McNab. Also her mother Janet Lowrie McNab, who died 4th February 1895, also the above Janet McNab, who died 3rd August 1923, also her brother Alexander McNab. The Lowrie surname, recorded as Lowrey, Lowry, Lowrie, Lewry and Lewrie, is a famous " border " surname which is equally prominent in both England and Scotland, and also in the Irish province of Ulster. It is derived from the Gaelic word " labhraidh " meaning " the spokesman. " The early name recordings include: Coilbert Lowrie, of Coldingham in 1497; David Lowry, a kings officer, of Edinburgh in 1529; and James Lewrey, appointed a burgess and freeman of the City of Glasgow in 1600.
