Old Photograph Earl Haig Statue Edinburgh Scotland

Old photograph of the Earl Haig statue outside Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland. Field Marshal Douglas Haig, 1st Earl Haig, born 19 June 1861, died 29 January 1928, was a British senior officer during the First World War. He commanded the British Expeditionary Force from 1915 to the end of the war. The statue was gifted to the city in 1923 by Sir Dhunjibhoy Bomanji, a wealthy Bombay shipping magnate, who was keen to be seen as being very supportive of the British. The inscription on the statue reads: " Earl Haig: This statue was presented to the City of Edinburgh by Sir Dhunjibhoy Bomanji of Bombay in admiration of the services rendered to the British Empire by the Field Marshal. " The statue has been relocated inside the castle itself.

Old Photograph George Watson's College Edinburgh Scotland

Old photograph of pupils outside George Watson's College in Edinburgh, Scotland. The school was established according to the instructions of George Watson, born 1654, died 1723, who bequeathed the bulk of his fortune to found a school for the provision of post primary boarding education. The school opened as George Watson's Hospital on Whitsunday, 17 May 1741. The initial roll consisted of 11 boys, aged 9 to 10 years; by 1749 there were 30. By 1749 there were 30, while in 1842 pupils numbered 86. In 1869, the original hospital building was sold to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. When the infirmary sought to expand in 1871, the school moved a short distance west to the former Merchant Maiden Hospital building in Archibald Place. Old Photograph Necropolis Glasgow Scotland

Old photograph of the Necropolis in Glasgow, Scotland. The Glasgow Necropolis is a Victorian cemetery located on a low but very prominent hill to the east of Glasgow Cathedral. Fifty thousand individuals have been buried here. Typically for the period only a small percentage are named on monuments and not every grave has a stone. Approximately 3500 monuments exist here. The planning of the cemetery began formally by the Merchants' House of Glasgow in 1831, and Glasgow Necropolis officially opened in April 1833. Predating the cemetery, the statue of John Knox sitting on a column at the top of the hill, dates from 1825. Alexander Thomson designed a number of its tombs, and John Bryce and David Hamilton designed other architecture for the grounds.

Old Photograph Prince Albert Statue Edinburgh Scotland

Old photograph of the Prince Albert statue in Edinburgh, Scotland. This statue stands in the centre of Charlotte Square, in front of West Register House. In 1861 a plan was drawn up by Robert Matheson, Clerk of Works for Scotland for a larger, more square garden in Charlotte Square, centred upon a memorial to the recently deceased Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria. The commission for the sculpture was granted in 1865 to Sir John Steell. The main statue features an equestrian statue of the prince, in field marshal's uniform, dwarfing the four figures around the base. It was unveiled by Queen Victoria herself in 1876. The stone plinth was designed by the architect David Bryce and the four corner figures are by David Watson Stevenson. The house was built in between 1882 and 1884 by Captain James Scarlett, the laird of the island, to designs by John Honeyman, born 1831, died 1914, around an 18th Century building. It had to be rebuilt after a fire in 1896, by the same architect, but quite possibly with the assistance of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, born 1868, died 1928.

Old Photograph Shore Road Lamlash Island Of Arran Scotland

Old photograph of people, houses and cottages on Shore Road in Lamlash on the Island of Arran, Scotland. Lamlash is located in the southern half of the island, some three miles to the south of Brodick and five miles to the north of Whiting Bay. It is on the eastern side and sits on a bay facing the Holy Isle and the Firth of Clyde. In common with the rest of the island the village's main industry is tourism. In Lamlash the public sector is also an important employer. Fisheries is no longer important; although the Clyde was once the finest fishery in Europe it is now all but gone. There are strictly speaking no fish left in the Clyde for commercial capture and the few fishermen left are reduced to scraping the seabed for scallops and prawns. The village was the training place for No. 11 Scottish Commando during the early years of the Second World War.

Old Photograph Viaduct Lochearnhead Scotland

Old photograph of a steam train approaching the railway viaduct at Lochearnhead, Scotland. The Lochearnhead, St Fillans and Comrie Railway was established with the intention of filling the 15 mile gap between Comrie, Perthshire, where the railway had arrived in 1893, and the Callander and Oban Railway at Balquhidder. The line was authorised as far as St Fillans in 1897, opening on 1st October 1901. The Caledonian Railway took the company over in August 1902, thereafter extending the line to Lochearnhead in 1904. Trains first travelled the through route to Balquhidder on 1st May 1905. The line was never a commercial success and closed on 1st October 1951. Lochearnhead villages is located within the Breadalbane area of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Three clan family names associated with Lochearnhead are McLaren, Stewart and McGregor. The first of these is recorded in 1296, when Lauren of Ardveich had his name entered into the Ragman Roll. The McLaren burial ground at Leckine was last used in 1993. By the time the Stewarts came to Ardvorlich in 1582, the Reformed church, under the guidance of John Knox, had been adopted in Scotland for more than two decades. It was nearly two centuries later that the MacGregors acquired Edinchip, in 1778, building the current Edinchip House in 1830.

Old Photographs Tay Railway Bridge Scotland

Old photograph of a steam train on the Tay Railway Bridge which carries the railway line from Dundee, across the Firth of Tay to Wormit in The Kingdom of Fife, Scotland. The present structure is the second one on this site. On the night of 28 December 1879 at 7.15 pm, the first bridge collapsed after its central spans gave way during high winter gales. A train with six carriages carrying seventy five passengers and crew, crossing at the time of the collapse, plunged into the icy waters of the River Tay. All seventy five were lost. The disaster stunned the whole country and sent shock waves through the Victorian engineering community. The ensuing enquiry revealed that the bridge did not allow for high winds. At the time a gale estimated at force ten or eleven had been blowing down the Tay estuary at right angles to the bridge. The second bridge opened on 20 June 1887 and remains in use.

Old Photograph Birthplace Flora MacDonald South Uist Scotland

Old photograph of the birthplace of Flora MacDonald at Milton, South Uist, Scotland. Flora MacDonald, Gaelic: Fionnghal nic Dhòmhnaill, born 1722, died 4 March 1790, was a Jacobite heroine. She was the daughter of Ranald MacDonald of Milton on the island of South Uist in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, and his wife Marion, the daughter of Angus MacDonald. Her father died when she was a child, and her mother was abducted and married by Hugh MacDonald of Armadale, Isle Of Skye. She was brought up under the care of the chief of her clan, the MacDonalds of Clanranald her father's cousin, and was partly educated in Edinburgh. Throughout her life she was a practising Presbyterian. During the Jacobite Risings, in June 1746, at the age of 24, she was living on the island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides when Bonnie Prince Charlie took refuge there after the Battle of Culloden. The prince's companion, a Captain Conn O'Neill of The Feeva, County Antrim, sought her assistance to help the prince escape capture. The island was controlled by the Hanoverian government using a local militia, but the MacDonalds were secretly sympathetic with the Jacobite cause. After some hesitation, Flora promised to help the prince escape the island. At a later period she told the Duke of Cumberland, son of George II and commander-in-chief in Scotland, that she acted from charity and would have helped the duke himself were he in defeat and in distress.

The commander of the local militia was her stepfather, Hugh MacDonald. The commander gave her a pass to the mainland for herself, a manservant, an Irish spinning maid, Betty Burke, and a boat's crew of six men. The prince was disguised as Betty Burke. He had left Benbecula on 27 June. After a first repulse at Waternish, Skye, the party landed at Kilbride, Skye, within easy access of Monkstadt, the seat of Sir Alexander MacDonald. The prince was hidden in rocks while Flora MacDonald found help for him in the neighbourhood. It was arranged that he be taken to Portree, Skye and from there taken to Glam on the island of Raasay. The talk of the boatmen brought suspicion on Flora MacDonald, and she was arrested and brought to London, England, for aiding the prince's escape. After a short imprisonment in the Tower of London, she was allowed to live outside of it, under the guard of a jailer. When the Act of Indemnity was passed in 1747 she was released.

On 6 November 1750, at the age of 28, she married Allan MacDonald of Kingsburgh, a captain in the army and the eldest son of Alexander MacDonald VI. The couple lived at Flodigarry on the Isle of Skye where they subsequently were parents to five sons and two daughters. Upon the death of Allan MacDonald's father in 1772, the family moved into the MacDonald family estate at Kingsburgh.

In 1774, she and her husband emigrated to North Carolina. During the American War of Independence Captain MacDonald served the British government in the 84th Regiment of Foot Royal Highland Emigrants. Legend has it that she exhorted the Loyalist force at Cross Creek, North Carolina, present-day Fayetteville, that included her husband, Allan, as it headed off to its eventual defeat at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge in February, 1776.

He was captured after the battle and was held prisoner for two years until a prisoner exchange occurred in 1777. He was then sent to Fort Edward in Windsor, Nova Scotia where he took command of the 84th Regiment of Foot (Royal Highland Emigrants), Second Battalion. After her husband was taken prisoner, Flora remained in hiding while the American Patriots ravaged her family plantation and took all her possessions. When her husband was released from prison during the fall of 1778, she reunited with him at Fort Edward.

In 1779 Flora returned home to Scotland in a merchant ship. During the passage, the ship was attacked by a privateer. She refused to leave the deck during the attack and was wounded in the arm. Flora resided at the homes of various family members, including Dunvegan, her daughter Anne having married Major General Alexander Macleod. After the war, in 1784, Allan also returned and the family regained possession of the estate in Kingsburgh. Flora MacDonald had a large family of sons, who mostly entered the army or navy, and two daughters. She died at Kingsburgh on the Isle of Skye, Inner Hebrides, in 1790, at the age of 68. She is buried in the Kilmuir Cemetery.

Old Photograph Edenhall Hospital Pinkieburn Musselburgh Scotland

Old photograph of Edenhall Hospital in Pinkieburn by Musselburgh, Scotland. The original Edenhall Hospital was built in 1915 as a hostel for limbless ex-servicemen in the mansion house of Edenhall in Kelso, Scottish Borders. There was accommodation for 36 patients and the establishment was entirely run by eight voluntary lady workers. It was soon obvious that the accommodation was insufficient and in 1917 with the help of a £10,000 donation from the Red Cross the committee acquired the house and ground of Pinkieburn near Musselburgh. Originally there were 43 beds but wings were added to the mansion house to increase the accommodation to 100 beds. In 1920 the Ministry of Pensions took over the running of the hospital and it was now opened to convalescent cases as well as the limbless; in the period up to the Second World War it then became the main Ministry of Pensions Hospital in Scotland providing general medical and surgical treatment for war pensioners. During the war the Hospital expanded considerably to provide a total bed strength of 312. By 1953 the number of patients was declining and on the amalgamation of the Ministry of Pensions and the Ministry of National Insurance the opportunity was taken to transfer the responsibility for running the hospital to the National Health Service.

Old Photograph Fort Augustus From Loch Ness Scotland

Old photograph of Fort Augustus from a boat on Loch Ness, Scotland. In the aftermath of the Jacobite rising in 1715, General Wade built a fort, taking from 1729 until 1742, which was named after the Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. Wade had planned to build a town around the new barracks and call it Wadesburgh. The settlement grew, and eventually took the name of this fort. The fort was captured by the Jacobites in April 1745, just prior to the Battle of Culloden. Old photograph of sheep by Loch Earn Scotland. Loch Earn is a freshwater loch in the central highlands of Scotland, in the districts of Perthshire and Stirling.
