Old Photograph Savings Bank Govan Scotland

Old photograph of the Savings Bank in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. Govan located on the south bank of the River Clyde, opposite the mouth of the River Kelvin and the district of Partick. Historically it was part of the County of Lanark. Govan was at one point; the centre of the world renowned Clydeside shipbuilding industry, but few shipyards remain today. In 1841, Robert Napier began iron shipbuilding in Govan, and in 1843 produced its first ship, the Vanguard. He also procured a contract with the Royal Navy to produce vessels, notably the Jackal, the Lizard, and the Bloodhound. He also allowed naval officers in training to visit the shipyard to familiarise themselves with the new vessels. Napier's Shipyard in Govan was later acquired by William Beardmore and Company in 1900, before being sold on to Harland & Wolff in 1912. It finally closed in 1962 and most of the site was redeveloped into housing. Govan's other major shipbuilding firm was founded in the 1860s as: Randolph, Elder and Company, later becoming John Elder and Company. In 1885, the yard moved further west to its present site and was reorganised as the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company Ltd. This company continued until 1965, when it filed for bankruptcy. Blog post of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

The wooden pier was rebuilt in 1885 by the Tighnabruaich Estate who owned it from 1840 until 1950. George Olding owned it until 1965 when it became the responsibility of the local council. Passenger services on and around the Clyde were developed after the PS Comet was introduced into service in 1812 and tourism developed with the introduction of cruises through the Kyles around Bute, to Arran and along Loch Fyne. Old Photograph Dun Nosebridge Fort Island Of Islay Scotland

Old photograph of Dun Nosebridge Iron Age Fort near Bridgend Islay, Scotland. The name's origin is probably a mixture of Scottish Gaelic and Old Norse: Dun in the former language means " fort " and knaus-borg in the latter means " fort on the crag ". The fort overlooks upper Laggan valley. The defences consist of a wall which encloses the summit, and two outer ramparts extending along the North West side and round each end of the ridge. On the South East facing slope of the ridge which extends to the North East of the fort there are the turf covered foundations of several buildings of late 18th and 19th century date. Clearances in Nosebridge and other townships in the took place between 1848 and 1853, when the sequestrated Islay estate was being administered by a receiver, James Brown of Edinburgh. Old Photographs Lagavulin Whisky Distillery Island Of Islay Scotland

Old photograph of Lagavulin Whisky Distillery on the Island of Islay, Scotland. The distillery of Lagavulin officially dates from 1816, when John Jonston and Archibald Campbell constructed two distilleries on the site. One of them became Lagavulin, taking over the other, which one is not exactly known. Records show illicit distillation in at least ten illegal distilleries on the site as far back as 1742, however. In the 19th century, several legal battles ensued with their neighbour Laphroaig, brought about after the distiller at Lagavulin, Sir Peter Mackie, leased the Laphroaig distillery. It is said that Mackie attempted to copy Laphroaig's style. Since the water and peat at Lagavulin's premises was different from that at Laphroaig's, the result was different. The Lagavulin distillery is located in the village of the same name. Lagavulin is known for its producer's use of a slow distillation speed and pear shaped pot stills. The two wash stills have a capacity of 11,000 litres and the two spirit stills of 12,500 litres each.

Old Photograph Public Park Ormiston Scotland

Old photograph of children in the Public Park in Ormiston, East Lothian, Scotland. The village of Ormiston was the first planned village in Scotland, founded in 1735 by John Cockburn, born 1685, died 1758, one of the initiators of the Agricultural Revolution. The word Ormiston is derived from a half mythical Anglian settler called Ormr, meaning " serpent " or " snake ". Ormres family had possession of the land during the 12th and 13th centuries. Ormiston or Ormistoun is not an uncommon surname, and Ormr also survives in some English placenames such as Ormskirk and Ormesby. The latter part of the name, formerly spelt " toun ", is likely to descend from its Northumbrian Old English and later Scots meaning as " farmstead " or " farm and outbuildings " rather than the meaning " town ".
