Old Photograph Bruntsfield Hospital Edinburgh Scotland

Old photograph of Bruntsfield Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. This Scottish Hospital started in 1878 as a women's out-patient dispensary opened by the city's first female doctor, Sophia Jex-Blake. It soon added some beds for in-patients, and moved from a busy, central area to the more peaceful Bruntsfield before the turn of the century. Its name from 1885, Edinburgh Hospital and Dispensary for Women and Children, continued in formal use into the 1930s, but before 1920 it started to be known as the Bruntsfield Hospital. For a few years, another of Scotland's pioneering female doctors, Elsie Inglis, was a consultant there. In 1948 the hospital was absorbed into the National Health Service, it closed in 1989.

Old Photograph Women Washing Clothes River Tay Stanley Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of women washing clothes by the River Tay by Stanley, Perthshire, Scotland. Much of Stanley's economy was based on a mill powered by the River Tay. The mill mostly produced cotton but also cigarette ribbon. The Dempster & Co company was established in 1787 by seven men including Richard Arkwright, George Dempster and William Sandeman to build the mill on land feued from the Duke of Atholl to provide employment to Highlanders affected by the clearances. The mill extracted gas from coal to run lighting, this was replaced in 1921 when a hydroelectric power plant was built which supplied electricity to the village as well as the mill. During the 1960s and 1970s the mill was in decline and finally closed down in 1989.

Old Photograph Main Street Limekilns Fife Scotland

Old photograph of children, cottage and houses on the Main Street in Limekilns near Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. In its early days Limekilns was mainly a fishing village, with the large natural harbour providing docking facilities for small to medium transport and cargo ships. For many centuries Limekilns was also the northern terminus for a ferry linking it to Bo'ness on the southern side of the Forth. This found an echo in Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped: and it was from Limekilns that David Balfour and Alan Breck were carried across the Forth in a rowing boat. Soap was also produced from a soapworks located near Caupernaum Pier. The years of industrial decline meant that most of these industries were lost and Limekilns became just another sleepy coastal village.

Old Photograph Glenkinchie Scotland

Old photograph of children and cottages in Glenkinchie village near Pencaitland in East Lothian about 15 miles South East of Edinburgh, Scotland. The whisky distillery here was founded in the 1830s by the brothers John and George Rate, was rebuilt in 1890 then again between the two World Wars. The name Kinchie is a corruption of De Quincy, the original owners of the land. Its origins date back to around 1825 when it was founded by brothers John and George Rate, While there are no direct records it seems likely that Glenkinchie is the Milton Distillery previous recorded in the area. The brothers probably renamed it in about 1837. In 1853, the Rate Brothers were bankrupted and the site converted to a sawmill.

Old Photograph Steamer Gitana Loch Rannoch Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of the steamer Gitana on Loch Rannoch near Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire, Scotland. This steam yacht was built in 1881 by Thomas B Seath of Rutherglen. The yacht was intended to run on remote Loch Rannoch. She was built to the order of Major General MacDonald of Dunalistair Estate near Kinloch Rannoch for his own use but also as a public service vessel. Unfortunately, the prospect of increased tourism was not appreciated by other inhabitants around the loch and she was refused a berth at the sheltered western end of the loch. Early in 1882 gales on the loch smashed her saloon windows and allowed the considerable swell to enter the tiny hull. After only seven months on the loch she sank in over 100 feet of water. There she lay for the next 96 years until 1978 when strenuous efforts by a number of sub aqua clubs assisted by the Army managed to raise the hulk to the surface of Loch Rannoch for the first time in almost a century. There were high hopes that she would be restored and may even sail again! Sadly, it was not to be as the weakened hull gave way during efforts to stabilise it and the attempt to restore her had to be abandoned.

Old Photograph Bridge Street Halkirk Scotland

Old photograph of children, house and cottages on Bridge Street in Halkirk, Caithness, Scotland. Halkirk has had two whisky distilleries, Gerston from 1796 to 1885, and Ben Morven from 1886 to circa 1911. Both were established on the banks of the River Thurso, near Gerston Farm, and both drew water from Calder Burn. The Ben Morven distillery was named for the mountain of the same name. The original Gerston distillery was first registered by a Francis Swanson, and was expanded by two sons, John and James, in 1825. Sir Robert Peel is said to have acquired a taste for the whisky. The distillery closed not long after it was sold to new owners in 1872, and a London company, calling themselves the Gerston Distillery Company, decided to build a new distillery. In 1897 the new distillery was sold to Northern Distilleries Limited, who gave it the Ben Morven name. It was never very successful, and it closed around 1911. The stillhouse is still standing.

Old Photograph West Wemyss Fife Scotland

Old photograph of houses and children in West Wemyss, Fife, Scotland. This Scottish village is located on the north shore of the Firth of Forth coast. The village began as a settlement around the site of Wemyss Castle which developed into a centre for the salt industry in the area. A harbour was later built in 1621 by the Wemyss family for the use of coal exportation from the pits on the lands of their estate. The harbour would become a major export point for coal by the late 17th century. The ships brought back imports of wood, iron and flax from the Baltic Countries. A wet dock was added for the increased demand of the coal in the late 1870s. Towards the latter stages of the 19th century, the village found itself surrounded by several mines, such as the Michael Pit in nearby East Wemyss. The industry, which saw trade with England and The Low Countries, started to struggle once the new docks were opened in Methil further along the Fife coast. Gradually, the demand for the harbour began to fall and it went into decline.

Old Photograph Gardyne Street Friockheim Scotland

Old photograph of people outside the church on Gardyne Street in Friockheim, Angus, Scotland. Standing on the corner of Station Road, where the Road divides between Gardyne Street and Millgate, Friockheim's church forms a focal point to the west end of the village. Friockheim Parish Church was built in 1835 using stones from a nearby ruined chapel at Dunnichen, and was originally a chapel of ease. It was extended five years later to form an L-plan structure. The interior of the church was remodelled in around 1880 and the tower's steeple was removed in 1950. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
