Old Photograph Lighthouse Port Ellen Islay Scotland

Old photograph of the lighthouse at Carraig Fhada just South West of Port Ellen, Islay, Scotland. The lighthouse was erected in 1832 to the memory of Lady Ellinor Campbell by her husband, Walter Frederick Campbell. Walter, born on 10 April 1798, was a Scottish politician. He served as the Member of Parliament for Argyllshire, from 1822 to 1832 and 1835 to 1841. His father John Campbell, born 1770, died 1809, was the son of Walter Campbell of Shawfield, from whom Walter Frederick inherited the island of Islay. He was the father of John Francis Campbell, born 1821, died 1885, born on Islay. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1822. As the Laird of Islay he incurred an enormous debt of £800,000 on " improvements " to the island. Creditors forced the sale of the island and the family left in 1847. He died on 8 February 1855.
