Old Photograph Shepherds Dairy Shop Glasgow Scotland

Old photograph of Shepherds Dairy shop in Glasgow, Scotland. The Shepherd surname is of Anglo-Saxon origins. It is usually an occupational name either for someone employed to tend and watch over sheep, or as a town watchkeeper. The derivation is from the pre 7th century word " sceap ", with either " hierde " a herdsman, or " weard ", a watchman. Occasionally the modern surname may derive from an occupational name for a "shipward". Thomas Shypward in 1432, and John Shipward in 1467 being listed in the register of the skilled men of the city of Bristol, England. There are at least ten variant spellings of the surname, ranging from Shepherd, Shephard and Sheppard to Shepeard, Shepheard, Shepperd and Shippard. Amongst the recorded examples of the name in the early surviving church registers of the city of London is the christening of Jone Shepherd on August 3rd 1585, at St. Mary's, Whitechapel, Stepney, whilst Samuell Shepard was an early emigrant to the American colonies, leaving London on the " Defence " in July 1635.

Old Photograph Grant Street Burghead Scotland

Old photograph of shop, car, houses and cottages on Grant Street in Burghead located eight miles North West of Elgin, Moray, Scotland. The present town was built between 1805 and 1809, destroying in the process more than half of the site of an important Pictish hill fort. General Roy’s map shows the defences as they existed in the 18th century but he wrongly attributed them to the Romans. The fort was probably a major Pictish centre and was where carved slabs depicting bulls were found; they are known as the " Burghead Bulls ". A chambered well of some considerable antiquity was discovered in 1809 and walls and a roof were later added to help preserve it. Each year on 11 January a fire festival known as the Burning of the Clavie takes place; it is thought that the festival dates back to the 17th century, although it could easily predate this by several centuries. Burghead is often known by locals as The Broch, a nickname also applied to Fraserburgh in nearby Aberdeenshire.

Old Photograph Drummond Street Comrie Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of cottages and houses on Drummond Street in Comrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Comrie's early prosperity derived from weaving. This was mostly done as piecework in people's own cottages and houses. Comrie was also important as a droving town. Highland Cattle destined for the markets of the Scottish Lowlands and ultimately England would be driven south from their grazing areas in the Highlands. River crossings, such as at Comrie, were important staging posts on the way south. Much of the land around Comrie was owned by the Drummond family, Earls of Perth, latterly Earls of Ancaster, whose main seat was Drummond Castle, south of Crieff. Another branch of the Drummonds owned Drummondernoch, to the west of the town. Aberuchill Castle, however, just outside Comrie was originally a Campbell seat. Comrie underwent something of a renaissance in the early 19th century and Victorian periods as an attractive location for wealthy residents and visitors. Robert the Bruce, king of Scotland, the outlaw Rob Roy McGregor and Scotland's internationally renowned national poet Robert Burns all mentioned their stays in the village Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.

Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has pow'r to save us.
Make us your living voice.

Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed.

Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone.

Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.

Fairest Lord Jesus, Ruler of all nature,
O Thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, Thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy and crown.

Fair are the meadows, fairer still the woodlands,
Robed in the blooming garb of spring;
Jesus is fairer, Jesus is purer,
Who makes the woeful heart to sing.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling starry host;
Jesus shines brighter, Jesus shines purer
Than all the angels heaven can boast.

All fairest beauty, heavenly and earthly,
Wondrously, Jesus, is found in Thee;
None can be nearer, fairer or dearer,
Than Thou, my Savior, art to me.

Beautiful Savior! Lord of all the nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
Now and forever more be Thine

Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.
“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!”
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Old Photograph Quarry Crarae Scotland

Old photograph of the quarry at Crarae near Inveraray, Scotland. On Saturday, September 25, 1886, according to annual custom, a company numbering upward of 1,000 persons, including several members of the Glasgow Corporation, their wives and families, proceeded on board the Lord of the Isles steamer to Loch Fyne, to witness the great blast at the Crarae quarries. The quarries are situated on the face of a hill, rising 150 feet, perpendicularly from the loch. The steamer gave the signal for the explosion by blowing her whistle. Seven tons of powder were fired, and seventy thousand tons of rock were dislodged. It was reckoned a most successful blast, and thus far all went well. But then the passengers were anxious to land and inspect the scene of operations. Some three hundred of them did so, and all who could squeeze in entered the quarry. At first nothing untoward happened, but after a few minutes one visitor after another fell motionless to the ground, overpowered by the noxious vapours which the explosion had generated. A quarryman had, it seems, given them warning of their danger, but his words were either misunderstood or disregarded. Nearly a hundred persons were thus prostrated, and of these seven died on the spot, while others remained in a critical condition for several days. It is remarkable that the mephitic vapours did not begin to ooze out from the crushed rock until some time after the blast. This no doubt lulled the visitors into a false sense of security.

Old Photograph Norman Macleod Scotland

His parents were the Reverend Dr. Norman Macleod and Agnes Maxwell; his paternal grandfather, a minister of the parish of Morvern in Argyllshire, bore the same name. In 1827, Macleod became a student at the University of Glasgow; in 1831, he went to Edinburgh to study divinity under Dr Thomas Chalmers. On 18 March 1838, he became parish minister at Loudoun, Ayrshire. In 1851 he was called to the Barony church, Glasgow, in which city the rest of his days were passed. In 1867, along with Dr Archibald Watson, Macleod was sent to India, to inquire into the state of the missions. He undertook the journey in spite of failing health, and seems never to have recovered from its effects. His Glasgow church was named after him, the Macleod Parish Church; and the Macleod Missionary Institute was erected by the Barony church in Glasgow. Queen Victoria gave two memorial windows to Crathie church as a testimony of her admiration for his work. On 16 June 1872, he died in Glasgow. He was buried at Campsie.

Old Photograph Spectators Christmas Ba' Kirkwall Scotland

Old photograph of spectators at the Christmas Ba' game in Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands, Scotland. The Kirkwall Ba Game, also spelled ba', is one of the main annual events held in the town of Kirkwall, in Orkney, Scotland. It is one of a number of Ba Games played in the streets of towns around Scotland; these are examples of traditional football games which are still played in towns in the United Kingdom and worldwide. Games are played twice a year, normally on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Played in the Royal Burgh of Kirkwall, the two sides are the Uppies and the Doonies, or more correctly, " Up-the-Gates " and " Doon-the-Gates " from Norn gata, path or road, although it is also common in Scots. The tradition belongs to Kirkwall and the surrounding area of St Ola, and has always been played by men from those two areas since before records began. In the past 50 years, mainly due to improved transport, the game's popularity has grown to include players from all areas of Orkney, including some of the outer isles.

Old Photograph Sule Skerry Lighthouse Scotland

Old photograph of Sule Skerry lighthouse located West of the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Sule Skerry is a remote skerry in the North Atlantic. A skerry is a small rocky island, usually defined to be too small for habitation; it may simply be a rocky reef. A skerry can also be called a low sea stack. Sule Skerry lighthouse was the most remote manned lighthouse in Great Britain from its opening in 1895 to its automation in 1982. Its remote location meant that construction could only take place during the summer, thus it took from 1892 to 1894 to complete.
