Old Photograph Mill o Tifty Fyvie Scotland

Old photograph of Mill o Tifty near Fyvie, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

At the mill o' Tifty's lived a man
In the neighbourhood o' Fyvie,
For he had a lovely daughter fair
And they ca'd her bonnie Annie.

Noo her bloom was like the springin' flo'er
That hails the rosy mornin',
And her innocence and graceful mien
Her beauteous face adornin'.

Noo, her hair was fair and her eyes were blue
And her cheeks as red as rosies,
And her countenance was fair to view
And they ca'd her Bonnie Annie.

Noo, Lord Fyvie had a trumpeter
Wha's name was Andrew lammie,
And he had the airt to gain the hairt
O' the mill o' Tifty's Annie.

Noo, Lord Fyvie he rode by the door
Where lived Tifty's Annie,
And his trumpeter rode him before
Even this same Andra Lammie.

Noo, her mother cried her to the door,
Sayin', "Come here to me, my Annie.
Did e'er ye see a prettier man
Than the trumpeter o' Fyvie ?"

Oh naithin' she said, but sighin' sare.
'Twas alas for bonnie Annie !
For she durst nae own her hairt was won
By the trumpeter o' Fyvie.

"Oh, my love, I go tae Edinburgh toon
And for a while must leave."
"Oh, but I'll be deid afore ye cam back
In the green kirk yaird o' Fyvie."

Noo, her faither struck her wondrous sore
And also did her mother,
And her sisters also took their score
But woe be tae her brother.

Her brother struck her wondrous sore,
Wi' cruel strokes - and many,
And he broke her back owre the temple stane,
Aye, the temple stane o' Fyvie.

"Oh, mother dear, please make my bed
And lay my face tae Fyvie,
For I will lie and I will die
For my dear Andra Lammie."

Noo, when Andra hame fae Edinburgh came
Wi' muckle grief and sorrow ;
"Oh, my love she died for me last night
So I'll die for her tomoorow."

Old Photograph St Columba Church Isleornsay Skye Scotland

Old photograph of St Columba Church, Isleornsay, Sleat Peninsula on the Isle Of Skye, Scotland. The Mission Church at Isleornsay was built by Messrs Forbes and Macleod of Stornoway,Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides. It was formally opened on Tuesday 27 August 1901. Isleornsay is a village lying off the main Armadale to Sleat road, it overlooks, but is not upon, the island of Ornsay. Emigration from the Highlands and Islands was endemic in the 19th century and the company that ran the Isleornsay store, MacDonald and Elder, acted as emigration agents from the early 1800s. In 1822 they advertised that they were able to to fit out transports for the conveyance of passengers from Inverness and the West Coast of the Scottish Highlands to the east coast of Canada. In the 1830s a programme of assisted passages to Australia from the Sleat peninsula was organised. The William Nicol sailed to Sydney from Isleornsay in July 1837 with 322 passengers including 70 families from Sleat. At the time it was reported that so many local people wished to emigrate that the ship could not accommodate all those who wanted to embark.

Old Photograph Hydroelectric Dam Tunnel Lochaber Scotland

Old photograph of workers building the Hydroelectric Dam Tunnel in Lochaber, Scotland. This was part of a hydroelectric power generation project constructed in the Lochaber area of the western Scottish Highlands after the First World War. Like its predecessor at Kinlochleven, it was intended to provide electricity for aluminium production, this time at Fort William, a little further north. The scheme was initially designed by engineer Charles Meik but after his death in 1923, the scheme’s realisation was left to William Halcrow, by then a partner in the firm originally founded by Meik’s father Thomas Meik. The scheme harnessed the headwaters of the Rivers Treig and Spean and the flood waters of the River Spey, plus a further eleven small rivers burns along the way. The Laggan Dam contained the flow of the Spean in a reservoir, Loch Laggan. A three mile long tunnel then linked this body of water with another reservoir at Loch Treig contained by the Treig dam. From here, the main tunnel, until 1970 the longest water carrying tunnel in the world, 15 miles long and 15 feet in diameter, was driven around the Ben Nevis massif. From the western mountainside, down five massive steel pipes, the water rushed towards the turbines in the power house at the smelting plant.

Old Photograph Children Making Sphagnum Moss Dressings Orkney Islands Scotland

Old photograph of children making Sphagnum Moss Dressings on the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Millions of wound dressings made from Sphagnum, or bog moss, were used during World War I. Europe has a long history of the exploitation of peatlands. The Netherlands, for example, once had large areas of peatland, both fen and bog. Between 100 AD and the present, they were drained and converted to agricultural land. The English broad lands have small lakes that originated as peat mines. More than 90% of the bogs in England have been damaged or destroyed. A handful of bogs have been preserved through government buyouts of peat mining interests. Over longer time scales, however, some parts of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have seen expansion of bogs, particularly blanket bogs, in response to deforestation and abandonment of agricultural land.

Old Photograph Coronation Day Kirkwall Orkney Islands Scotland

Old photograph of Coronation Day in Kirkwall on the Orkney Islands, Scotland. Kirkwall is the largest town and capital of the Orkney Islands. The town is first mentioned in Orkneyinga saga in the year 1046 when it is recorded as the residence of Rögnvald Brusason the Earl of Orkney, who was killed by his uncle Thorfinn the Mighty. In 1486, King James III of Scotland elevated Kirkwall to the status of a royal burgh; modern road signs still indicate The City and Royal Burgh of Kirkwall. The name Kirkwall comes from the Norse name Kirkjuvagr, meaning Church Bay, which was later changed to Kirkvoe, Kirkwaa and Kirkwall.
