Tour Scotland Autumn Video Ossian's Hall Dunkeld Perthshire

Tour Scotland Autumn video of Ossian's Hall overlooking the gorge of the Black Linn Falls by Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland. The Ossian's Hall folly was built on a rocky outcrop for the 2nd Duke of Atholl in 1757. James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl, born 28 September 1690, died 8 January 1764, styled Marquess of Tullibardine between 1715 and 1746, was a Scottish peer, and Lord Privy Seal. He was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the third son of John Murray, 1st Duke of Atholl, by Lady Catherine, daughter of William Hamilton, Duke of Hamilton. On the approach of the highland army after the Jacobite rising of 1745, Atholl fled southwards, and his elder brother, the Marquis of Tullibardine, took possession of Blair Castle. Atholl, however, joined the army of the Duke of Cumberland in England, and, arriving with him in Edinburgh on 30 January 1746, went northwards. On 9 February, he sent a summons to his vassals to attend at Dunkeld and Kirkmichael and join the king's troops. On 6 April 1763, Atholl resigned the office of privy seal on being appointed keeper of the great seal in succession to Charles Douglas, Duke of Queensberry and Dover. He was also at the same time made lord justice general.

The land was confiscated from the Chalmers family in 1473 by James III and given to Sir Colin Campbell of Glenorchy after Thomas Chalmers was implicated in the murder of James I. The lands have mainly remained in the ownership of the Campbells of Glenorchy and Breadalbane right up to the present day.

It is approximately 7 miles east of Killin and lies at the mouth of the Ardeonaig Burn where it enters Loch Tay. When boats ran on the loch they stopped at Ardeonaig, where coal was delivered and passengers could disembark. Now, fishing trips on Loch Tay stop at the Ardeonaig Hotel jetty to disembark for lunch before continuing down the Loch. There must have been a ferry service because the minister came by boat to conduct church services. At Ardeonaig there is an outdoor centre, run by the Abernethy Trust.

Tour Scotland Video Alexander MacDonald Window Dunino Near St Andrews

Tour Scotland video of the Alexander MacDonald stained glass window in the Parish Church on ancestry visit to Dunino near St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. Commemorating Alexander MacDonald, minister of Dunino 1911 to 1949.

Clan MacDonald is the most famous and numerous of the long line of Scottish Highland Clans. The surname is now recorded in every part of the world, the origination of the chiefs being from one Donald of the Isles in the 10th century a.d. The derivation is from the Gaelic Mac Dhomhnuill, translating as The son of Donald. Amongst the many famous MacDonalds are Flora MacDonald, born 1722. died 1790, the rescuer of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, and Sir John MacDonald, the founder and premier of the Dominion of Canada, born 1815, died 1891. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Therthelnac MakDonenalde, which was dated circa 1251, a charter witness at Lesmore, Scotland, during the reign of King Alexander 111 of Scotland.

Old Photograph Tennis Courts St Andrews Scotland

Old photograph of the tennis courts at Kinburn Park, St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. Tennis in its earlier forms was introduced into Scotland from France in the Middle Ages. It was traditionally known as " caitch " or " cache " in Scotland, and is an ancestor of the better known form of tennis. In the nineteenth century, tennis was a fairly exclusive sport, with high level participation being mainly by the upper classes. Scotland produced two Wimbledon men's champions in this period, Herbert Lawford and Harold Mahony. However, to complicate matters, Lawford was born in England but died in Scotland, and Mahony was Scottish born, but died in County Kerry, Ireland, where his family were from. This perhaps demonstrates the complications of trying to assign a nationality to a sports player.

Award winning fish and chips and fresh local seafood have always been synonymous with Anstruther, and the famous Anstruther Fish Bar. Fish and chips became a common meal among the working classes in Scotland as a consequence of the rapid development of trawl fishing in the North Sea, and the development of railways which connected the ports to major industrial cities during the second half of the 19th century, which meant that fresh fish could be rapidly transported to the heavily populated areas.

Colquhoun is a surname of Scottish origin. It is a habitational name from the barony of Colquhoun in Dumbartonshire. The name is thought to be derived from the Gaelic elements còil, meaning nook, cùil, meaning corner, or coille, meaning wood. Calhoun, Calhoon, Colhoon, Colhoun, Hoon, Cahoun, and Cahoon are variants of the surname Colquhoun. They are generally found only in the United States of America and Canada.
