Tour Scotland Photograph Cairn and Rainbow Isle of Arran

Tour Scotland photograph of a Cairn and a Rainbow on the Island of Arran, Scotland. Arran or the Isle of Arran, Scottish Gaelic: Eilean Arainn, at 432 square kilometres, is the largest island in the Firth of Clyde and the seventh largest Scottish island. Historically part of Buteshire, it is in the unitary council area of North Ayrshire. Though culturally and physically similar to the Hebrides, it is separated from them by the Kintyre peninsula. It is divided into highland and lowland areas by the Highland Boundary Fault and has been described as a " geologist's paradise. " Arran has been continuously inhabited since the early Neolithic period, and numerous prehistoric remains have been found. From the 6th century onwards, Goidelic speaking peoples from Ireland colonised it and it became a centre of religious activity. During the troubled Viking Age, Arran became the property of the Norwegian crown, until formally absorbed by the kingdom of Scotland in the 13th century. The 19th century " clearances " led to significant depopulation and the end of the Gaelic language and way of life.

Tour Scotland Photograph Isle Of Lewis

Tour Scotland photograph of the Isle of Lewis, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. The largest and the most northerly of the islands of the Outer Hebrides, has had an eventful story from prehistoric times through to the present. Evidence of human occupation stretches back to 3000 BC, explicit in the iconic silhouettes of the Standing Stones at Callanish. After the Vikings left in the ninth century, the clans of West Scotland quickly moved in, and Lewis was the site of many feuds between the Morrisons, the MacAulays and the MacLeods. The island operated largely independently until it was purchased by the MacKenzies in 1600 and was finally drawn into Scotland's mainland politics. It was then purchased by Sir James Matheson in 1844, and finally by Lord Leverhulme, in the 20th century.Throughout the centuries the people of Lewis have taken their living from the land and the surrounding seas, and these elements, together with the climate of the island, have determined their history far more than the vicissitudes of its ownership.

Tour Scotland video of the Tusks in Dundee, Scotland. These concrete tusks are located near Lochee Road in Dundee. The Dundee Whaling fleet participated in the Arctic Whale and seal hunting for longer than many other countries, Dundee had a presence in the Whaling industry from 1753 starting with the ship Dundee to just before the start of the Great War. The last custom built steam ship from Alexander Stephen’s yard in Dundee was the Terra Nova, which gained fame with the relief mission to the Discovery and was also used by Captain Robert Falcon Scott on his second, doomed expedition to the South Pole. The Discovery itself was not a working whaling ship although it was built on the lines of a whaler it was primarily for the Scott expedition to the South Pole.
