Old Photographs Whiting Bay Isle Of Arran Scotland

Old photograph of Whiting Bay, Isle of Arran, Scotland. The village is approximately 3 miles south of the village of Lamlash. Whiting Bay is the third largest village on the island, after Lamlash and Brodick, and was once the site of the longest pier in Scotland. Like all villages on Arran, tourism is important to the village. To the north of the village at Kings Cross Point between Lamlash and Whiting Bay is an Iron Age fort known locally as the Viking Fort. According to local legend, this is the site where Robert the Bruce mistook farmers' fires on the mainland as the signal to launch his campaign. This site was also the location of a Viking ship burial excavated in the earlier 20th century. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.

Old Selkirk. Selkirk owed its expansion in the mid-nineteenth century to its mills and the workforce they required, but this period of industrial fervour lasted only a century. However, in the town's heyday there were prosperous shops and myriad sporting clubs and associations. In this history of the town, this heyday is recaptured through more than fifty period photographs. Subjects include the public hall under construction, curling at Thorniehall, the horse-drawn coal cart on Curror Street, the railway station, the Corn Mill on Station Road, manoeuvres of the Lothian & Border Horse, the opening of the footbridge to Ettrickbank, the Common Riding, and the various rugby, soccer and cricket clubs. Tour Scotland Video The Dark Island Folk Night Wheel Inn Scone Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of John Davidson singing The Dark Island at a pub in Scone by Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. In the pub to hear my friend John sing. He is a fine folk singer and musician who is based in Blackford, Perthshire, Scotland. The Dark Island is one of my favourite Scottish songs.

Away to the westward, I'm longing to be
Where the beauties of heaven’ unfold by the sea
Where the sweet purple heather’ blooins fragrant and free
On a hill-top, high above the Dark Island
Oh Isle of my childhood I'in dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I'll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I'm back, once more upon, the Dark Island
.
So gentle the sea breeze’ that ripples the bay
Where the stream joins the ocean, and young children play
On a strand of pure silver, I'll welcome each day
And I'll roam forever more, the Dark Island
Oh Isle of my childhood I'in dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I'll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I'm back, once more upon, the Dark Island
.
True gem of the hebrides, bathed in the light
Like a midsummer dawning, that follows the night
How I long for the cry, of the seagulls in flight
As they circle high above’ the Dark Island
Oh Isle of my childhood I'm dreaming of thee
As the steamer leaves Oban, and passes Tiree
Soon I'll capture the magic, that lingers for me
When I'm back, once more upon, the Dark Island.

Tour Scotland video of John Davidson singing Westering Home at the Wheel Inn in Scone by Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. In the pub to hear my friend John sing. He is a fine folk singer and musician who is based in Blackford, Perthshire, Scotland.

Westering home and a song in the air
Light in the eye and its good by to care
Laughter o love and a welcoming there
Isle of my heart my own land

Tell me a tale of the Orient gay
Tell me of riches that come from Cathay
Ah but it's grand to be waken at day
And find oneself nearer to Islay

And it's westering home with a song in the air
Light of me eye and it's goodbye to care
Laughter and love are a welcoming there
Pride of my heart my own love

Where are the folks like the folks of the west
Canty and couthy and kindly, our best
There I would hie me and there I would rest
At home with my own folks in Islay

And it's westering home with a song in the air
Light of me eye and it's goodbye to care
Laughter and love are a welcoming there
Pride of my heart my own love

Now I'm at home and at home I do lay
Dreaming of riches that come from Cathay
I'll hop a good ship and be on my way
And bring back my fortune to Islay

And it's westering home with a song in the air
Light of me eye and it's goodbye to care
Laughter and love are a welcoming there
Pride of my heart my own love

Tour Scotland February Video Loch Lomond Folk Night Wheel Inn Scone Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of John Davidson singing Loch Lomond at the Wheel Inn in Scone by Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. John is a folk singer and musician who is based in Blackford, Perthshire, Scotland.

By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love were ever wont to gae,
On the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

Oh! Ye'll take the high road, and I'll take the low road,
And I'll be in Scotland afore ye,
But me and my true love will never meet again,
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

'Twas then that we parted, In yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond,
Where, in purple hue, The highland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

The wee birdies sing, And the wild flowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters sleeping.
But the broken heart it kens, Nae second spring again,
Though the waeful may cease frae their greeting.

Old Photographs Shotts North Lanarkshire Scotland

Old photograph of Shotts, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. Shotts is a small rural town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is located almost halfway between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Matthew Baillie was born in Shotts Manse on 27 October 1761 the son of Reverend James Baillie and Dorothea Hunter. His sister was the poet Joanna Baillie. He was a pupil of his uncle, the anatomist John Hunter and his father in law, Dr. Thomas Denman, an eminent obstetrician in London, England, at the turn of the nineteenth century, whose textbook on childbirth had been first published in 1788. Baillie was educated at the Old Grammar School of Hamilton, renamed the Hamilton Academy in 1848, the University of Glasgow, and obtained his MD from the University of Oxford in 1789, having been named Snell Exhibitioner in 1779. On his death in 1783 his uncle William Hunter bequeathed him £5,000, his house in Great Windmill Street, plus the adjacent medical school and museum. Baillie taught at the school from 1783 to 1803. He then taught anatomy and was appointed Physician at St George's Hospital in 1789, but gave up both posts to establish his own medical practice in Grosvenor Square, becoming Physician in Ordinary to King George III. He became Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1790, specialising in morbid anatomy. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1790 and delivered their Croonian Lecture in 1791, on the subject of muscles. Baillie died of tuberculosis in 1823 in Duntisbourne at the age of 61 and was buried in Duntisbourne Abbots, Gloucestershire. He had married Sophia Denman, the sister of Thomas Denman.

Old Photographs Lanark Scotland

Old photograph of Lanark, Scotland. Lanark was the county town of the former county of Lanarkshire, though for many years Hamilton was the county town, before the formation of Strathclyde. Lanark railway station and coach station has frequent services to Glasgow. Lanark has served as an important market town since medieval times, and King David I made it a Royal Burgh in 1140, giving it certain mercantile privileges relating to government and taxation. King David I realised that greater prosperity could result from encouraging trade. He decided to create a chain of new towns across Scotland. These would be centres of Norman civilisation in a largely Celtic country, and would be established in such a way as to encourage the development of trade within their area. These new towns were to be known as Burghs.

Old Photograph West Anstruther Church Fife Scotland

Old photograph of West Anstruther, Fife, Scotland. Anstruther Wester Parish Church is on the western edge of the village of Anstruther in a graveyard cemetery which is bounded by a stream and a beach. In 1243, a church on this site was dedicated to St. Nicholas. The present structure consists of a sixteenth century tower and steeple and a mid nineteenth century main cell, which probably incorporates fabric from the medieval church. The graveyard surrounds the church to the north, south and east. It contains a number of 17th century memorials. I was raised in this old Scottish fishing village.

Old Photographs Irvine Scotland

Old photograph of Irvine, Ayrshire, Scotland. The town was once a haunt of Robert Burns, after whom two streets in the town are named; Burns Street and Burns Crescent. He is known to have worked in a flax mill on the Glasgow Vennel. Despite being classed as a new town, Irvine has had a long history stretching back many centuries and was classed as a Royal Burgh. There are also conflicting rumours that Mary, Queen of Scots stayed briefly at Seagate Castle. To this day there is still a yearly festival, called Marymass, held in the town.

One of the famous pictures by Millais is "Autumn Leaves" and these form part of the frame. The cut corners refer to immortality and are reminders of Effie Gray, Millais' wife who is buried with her children in a nearby churchyard. The first recorded Scottish name bearer appears to be Gilbert Mac Kenedi who witnessed a charter in Melrose around 1165. The Scottish Kennedy's are by remote origin Irish Gaels. In 1296 one, Alexander Kennedy was canon of Glasgow. Duncan Kennedy, provost of Aberdeen in 1321 was the first recorded of the name in the north east. The town also carried out an extensive trade with the Continent, and examples of foreign luxury goods have been recovered from excavations within the town, for example, Spanish silk, fine pottery from France; wine will also have been a major import, not least for the use of the Church. The main destinations were France, the Low Countries and the Baltic.
