Tour Scotland Photographs Balcomie Castle Crail East Neuk Of Fife

Tour Scotland photograph of Balcomie Castle by Crail, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. A sunny, though chilly afternoon near Balcomie Castle which is Fife's most easterly castle. Perhaps its most famous brush with history took place on the 12th of June 1538 when Mary of Guise landed at nearby Fife Ness. She decided to stay at the castle while couriers were sent to James V who was 10 miles up the road in St Andrews. He didn't hang about and promptly arrived at Balcomie to collect his future bride and escort her into St Andrews.

Tour Scotland Photographs Parish Church Kingsbarns East Neuk Of Fife January 21st

Tour Scotland photograph shot this afternoon of the Parish Church in Kingsbarns, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. This Scottish Church was built around 1630, receiving substantial alterations between 1810 and 1811 at the hand of Robert Balfour. The church faces south towards The Square, the central focus of the village of Kingsbarns. It is located within a graveyard, which is surrounded by a substantial coped wall. The church itself is built on a T plan with a south tower and west porch. The body of the church is harled with a Scottish slate roof. The harling is degrading on all faces of the building, revealing rough courses of squared sandstone and some interesting rough snecking on the north elevation of the main cell. The tower is built from ashlar and is capped by a spire with alternating bands of square and fishscale slate.

Tour Scotland Photograph Cambo House Kingsbarns East Neuk Of Fife January 21st

Tour Scotland photograph shot this afternoon of Cambo House, Kingsbarns, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The estate of Cambo was granted to Robert de Newenham by a charter of King William the Lion. His descendents took the name "de Cambhou", and had settled in Fife by the early 14th century. Sir John de Cambhou fought at the Battle of Methven in 1306, but was captured by the English and hanged at Newcastle. In 1599 the estate was granted to Thomas Myretoun. In 1668, Sir Charles Erskine, the Lord Lyon King of Arms and brother of the 3rd Earl of Kellie, purchased the property from the creditors of Patrick Merton. The estate passed through the Erskine family to the 5th Earl of Kellie, who forfeited his lands after supporting the Jacobite rising of 1745. In 1759 Cambo was sold to the Charteris family, who bought it for their son who was studying at St Andrews University. Thomas Erskine, 9th Earl of Kellie bought the estate back in the 1790s. A successful merchant in Sweden, he invested heavily in improving the estate, building the picturesque Georgian estate farms, and carrying out extensive land drainage. He commissioned the architect Robert Balfour to remodel the house in 1795. His descendents continued the improvement of the estate through the 19th century, laying out ornamental gerdens, with a series of early cast iron bridges. The old house comprised a tower house with numerous additions, including a first-floor conservatory. It was destroyed by fire in 1878, after a staff party when the Erskine family was away. The present house was built on the same site between 1879 and 1884, to designs by the architects Wardrop & Reid.

Tour Scotland Photographs Parish Church and Graveyard Anstruther East Neuk Of Fife January 21st

Tour Scotland photograph shot this morning of the Parish Church in Anstruther, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The current Anstruther Church is made up of three previous Parish Churches. These were Anstruther Easter, Anstruther Wester and Chalmers Memorial, united in 1973. The building you are viewing was originally Anstruther Easter built in 1634 to allow the people of the area to worship locally, instead of having to make their way to Kilrenny Church. The steeple houses a clock with faces on three sides. This was paid for by public subscription and was put in place in 1878. The Church is a barn-like building with no apse or chancel. The steeple was an afterthought built in 1644, the spire the following year, to house a ‘siller bell’ brought from Holland. The bell is still in use today and bears the inscription “Andro Strang bought this bell with his ain monyes anno 1641.

Tour Scotland Photographs Parish Church Kilrenny East Neuk Of Fife

Tour Scotland photograph of the Parish Church in Kilrenny, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. There has been a church building in Kilrenny for over a thousand years. The first church in Kilrenny was probably connected with St Adrian, an Irish monk who lived in a cave at nearby Caiplie until killed by Vikings in 875. The old church was replaced in 1808 by the present building, although the tower still remains from the old church and dates back to the 1400’s.

Tour Scotland Photograph Insh Church and Cemetery Aviemore Cairngorms

Tour Scotland photograph of Insh Church and cemetery near, Aviemore, Scotland. Alvie and Insh Parish Church of Scotland is located in Kincraig close to Aviemore in Cairngorms National Park. Insh Church, is situated in a beautiful setting, high up, at the edge of Loch Insh. Although there are no written records in the church, prior to 1838, it is known that the church was extensively renovated in 1790. Around the same time, Thomas Telford designed two Manse houses. One for Insh Church and the other for Rothiemurchus. The manse for Insh church is now Insh Guest House, a new manse for Insh Church having being built at Alvie in 1810. Insh church was in a state of constant repair from the time of the renovations, and in 1861 an appeal was made to Sir George MacPherson-Grant for help. The appeal stated that the church was in a deplorable condition, and that it was also some distance away from the crofting community in Insh village.

Old Photographs Cowdenbeath Fife Scotland

Old photograph of Cowdenbeath, Fife, Scotland. The town grew up around the extensive coalfields of the area and became a Police Burgh in 1890. It is alleged that the infamous graverobbers Burke and Hare sourced some of their cadavers from local cemetery, to supply to the Scottish surgeon Robert Knox for dissection. When the actual name of Cowdenbeath came into being is not known, but it is thought to have originated when turnpike roads were first made and that it marked the spot of an inn and later of a tollhouse erected in the 17th century. Cowdenbeath first came into prominence around 1820 as a stop on the north bound coaching route to Perth, Perthshire. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
