The High Girders: Tay Bridge Disaster, 1879. On 28 December, 1879, the 13 raised spans at the centre of the Tay Bridge, the "high girders", fell, taking with them 160 yards of the bridge, and a railway train with 75 men, women and children on board. This tragically ended the dream of Thomas Bouch, recently knighted for his work on the bridge, and to some extent the unparalleled reputation of British engineering in works of this kind. This book tells the story of the construction of the Tay Bridge from its planning, through its brief moment of triumph followed by disaster and the grim aftermath. It recreates every character and ingredient of this man-made catastrophe, and evokes the drama of the fatal night. The High Girders: Tay Bridge Disaster, 1879.

St Andrews. The Home of Golf. This is a lavish, full-colour exploration of the Scottish town whose name is synonymous with golf. St Andrews - once Scotland's greatest city, the cradle of its religion and the birthplace of its first university; today the ancient burg is known the world over as the spiritual home of golf, a place that evokes images of windswept seaside links and legendary golfing champions. "St Andrews: The Home of Golf" celebrates this unique haven of the game through striking pictures by renowned golf photographer Kevin Murray, while the authors' blend of history, personal observations and anecdotes distills centuries of golfing tradition into lively, atmospheric prose. Combined, they capture the immortal nature of all that is best about golf embodied in one of its most important and beautiful locations. As the Open Championship returns to St Andrews in 2010, "St Andrews: The Home of Golf" marks the 150th anniversary of golf's oldest and most prestigious tournament with a lavish visual journey along the medieval city's bustling cobbled streets, through the doors of many prestigious golf clubs residing within its venerable greystone walls, and around each one of St Andrews' several great courses - from the famous Old Course to the stunning new Castle Course. For those who know and love St Andrews, this book will evoke fond memories. For those still to make the pilgrimage and walk in the footsteps of golf's greatest players, "St Andrews: The Home of Golf" is a must-read that no lover of the game should be without. Tour Scotland Video Sword Swallower Perth Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of a Sword Swallower at the Christmas Lights Switch On in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Steve Archibald in the city centre of Perth. Sword swallowing is a skill in which the performer passes a sword through the mouth and down the esophagus to the stomach. This feat is not swallowing in the traditional sense; the natural processes that constitute swallowing do not take place, but are repressed in order to keep the passage from the mouth to the stomach open for the sword. The practice is dangerous and there is risk of injury. Sword swallowing has a long and varied history. Sword swallowing spread to Greece and Rome in the 1st century AD and to China in the 8th century. In Japan, it became a part of the Japanese acrobatic theatre, Sangaku, which included fire eating, tightrope walking, juggling and early illusion. In Europe it developed into yet a third distinct type of performance associated with the medieval jongleurs, that of the street performance.

Tour Scotland Video Of Bed Of Nails Stunt Perth Perthshire

Tour Scotland video of a Bed of Nails stunt at the Christmas Lights Switch On in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Steve Archibald doing his stuff in the city centre of Perth. A bed of nails is an oblong piece of wood, the size of a bed, with nails pointing upwards out of it. It appears to the spectator that anyone lying on this " bed " would be injured by the nails, but this is not so. Assuming the nails are numerous enough, the weight is distributed among them so that the pressure exerted by each nail is not enough to puncture the person's skin.

Old Photographs Kisimul Castle Castlebay Barra Scotland

Old photograph of Kisimul Castle, Castlebay, Island of Barra, Scotland. The earliest documentary record of Kisimul Castle dates from the mid 16th century. As Kisimul is completely surrounded by the sea, it can only be reached by boat making the fortification impregnable but it has its own fresh water wells. Kisimul was abandoned in 1838 when the island was sold, and the castle's condition deteriorated. Some of its stone was used as ballast for fishing vessels, and some even ended up as paving in Glasgow. The remains of the castle, along with most of the island of Barra, were purchased by the chief of Clan MacNeill in 1937, who made efforts at restoration. In 2001 the castle was leased by the chief of Clan MacNeil to Historic Scotland for 1000 years for the annual sum of £1 and a bottle of whisky.

In A Scottish Graveyard Miscellany, Hamish Brown explores in words and extraordinary pictures the folk art of Scottish graveyards from the eighteenth century (when gravestones began to be widely used) to the present day. Each old kirkyard is a riotous celebration of folk art: there are skulls and skeletons, ships and lighthouses, angels galore, carved portraits of our forebears and even a gravestone decorated with a picture of Bart Simpson and his skateboard! More than mere memorials, the graves are a collection of pages in stone taken from the history of Scottish everyday life. Scotland's kirkyards are not gloomy places to be shunned, but places to find vivid stories from the lives of people, without distinction of class or creed. There is much humour in this book, and the photographs throughout taken by the author illustrate better than words why we should look after the unique treasuries in our midst. The Stone of Destiny: In Search of the Truth is the first book to explore the reasons behind the theft of the Stone of Scone in 1296 by King Edward I of England and to examine the validity of the myths and legends associated with its origins. It is widely believed that the stone taken to Westminster Abbey and returned to Scotland in 1996 was the Covenant Stone of the Israelites, also known as Jacob's Pillow, which was carried to Spain by the Egyptian Princess Scotia before being moved to Ireland and subsequently to Scotland, and used as the Coronation Seat of the early Scottish kings. The authors examine the political situation between the various kingdoms of Britain and the Church of Rome during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and how very real the threat of another European crusade, like the Albigensian Crusade, must have been felt in Scotland. Also explored are the many theories about the authenticity of the stone now on display in Edinburgh Castle and whether this is the Palladium of Scotland that Edward intended to take, or whether there is another artifact that can make sounder claims to being the genuine Coronation Stone. The Stone of Destiny: In Search of the Truth.

Tour Scotland Photograph Reflections Of Kinnoull Parish Church Perth Perthshire November 22nd

Tour Scotland photograph shot this morning of reflections in a pond in Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. Kinnoull Parish Church reflected in a pond at 10am this morning. The earliest recorded reference to Kinnoull Parish Church appears in Bagimond's Roll, a Papal taxation, of 1287. Although in the diocese of St Andrew's, it was not one of the churches mentioned as having been consecrated by Bishop David de Bainha in the middle of the 13th century. However, this is not to say that the parish did not exist or that there was not a church. The site of the original church building is uncertain. The "old church" at Wellbank, vacated on entry to the present building, was itself a renovation, carried out in 1779, of an earlier building on the same site. This building must have been in existence in 1635 since the statue of the first Earl of Kinnoull was erected in it in that year. The "old church" with its statue and graveyard now form an integral part of the Norie Miller Walk.
