St Andrews. The Home of Golf. This is a lavish, full-colour exploration of the Scottish town whose name is synonymous with golf. St Andrews, once Scotland's greatest city, the cradle of its religion and the birthplace of its first university; today the ancient burg is known the world over as the spiritual home of golf, a place that evokes images of windswept seaside links and legendary golfing champions. St Andrews: The Home of Golf celebrates this unique haven of the game through striking pictures by renowned golf photographer Kevin Murray, while the authors' blend of history, personal observations and anecdotes distills centuries of golfing tradition into lively, atmospheric prose. Combined, they capture the immortal nature of all that is best about golf embodied in one of its most important and beautiful locations. As the Open Championship returns to St Andrews in 2010, St Andrews: The Home of Golf marks the 150th anniversary of golf's oldest and most prestigious tournament with a lavish visual journey along the medieval city's bustling cobbled streets, through the doors of many prestigious golf clubs residing within its venerable greystone walls, and around each one of St Andrews' several great courses - from the famous Old Course to the stunning new Castle Course. Old Photograph Dunning Perthshire Scotland

Old photograph of Dunning, Perthshire, Scotland. Dunning is situated at the south east of Strathearn in Perthshire. St Serf's church in the centre of the village was rebuilt in the 19th century but the tower is early medieval, 2th century, with two-light arched Anglo-Saxon windows like Muthill Church. Like so many Strathearn villages, Dunning was burnt after the Battle of Sheriffmuir by the retreating Jacobite army. However the village retains it's earlier pattern with later buildings, 18th and 19th century, gathered around the church. A standing stone outside the village is said to mark the site of the Battle of Duncrub in 964AD. A local woman, Maggie Wall, was burnt as a witch in 1657 and a monument commemorates this sad event.

Tour Scotland Video Creel Boat Returning To Harbour St Andrews Fife

Tour Scotland video of a creel boat returning to the old harbour in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. The earliest records of lobster fishing in Scotland date back to the 12th century when lobster was caught by hand using ‘crooks’ and hoop nets. With the development of baited traps, exploitation on a more commercial basis was developed, and today creel fishing for the European lobster (Homarus gammarus) supports very important local fisheries around the Scottish coast.

The Briggers. The Story of the Men Who Built the Forth Bridge. The Forth Bridge has long been recognised as one of the finest examples of Victorian engineering on the planet and has achieved an iconic status as one of the great feats of western civilisation since its official opening in 1890. Lavishly illustrated throughout with stunning archive images, Elspeth Wills uncovers the human story behind 'the engineering marvel': the story of the Briggers. It is a story that has never been told before - of ordinary men working on an extraordinary structure in an often hostile and dangerous environment. Recognised throughout the world as an enduring icon of Scotland, the Forth Bridge is more than just a testament to the genius of Victorian engineering, it is a monument to all those who worked to realise its vision and to the scores of lives that were lost in the process. In this groundbreaking new work, Elspeth Wills gives a voice to the forgotten heroes who helped to make the ambition of the Bridge a reality. Highlander. The History of The Legendary Highland Soldier. Highlanders have long been among the most feared soldiers in the world and Tim Newark's book admirably tells their stirring tale. On the fields of Waterloo, the deserts of Sudan, the Plains of Abraham and the mountains of Dargai, the trenches of Flanders and the jungles of Burma, the great Highland regiments made their mark. The brave kilted troops with their pipes and drums were legendary, whether leading the charge into the thick of battle or standing fast, the last to leave or fall, fighting against the odds. Acclaimed historian Tim Newark tells the story of the Highlanders through the words of the soldiers themselves, from diaries, letters and journals uncovered from archives in Scotland and around the world. At the Battle of Quebec in 1759, only a few years after their defeat at Culloden, the 78th Highlanders faced down the French guns and turned the battle. At Waterloo, Highlanders memorably fought alongside the Scots Greys against Napoleon's feared Old Guard. In the Crimea, the thin red line stood firm against the charging Russian Hussars and saved the day at Balaclava. Yet the story is also one of betrayal. At Quebec, General Wolfe remarked that, despite the Highlanders' courage, it was 'no great mischief if they fall'. At Dunkirk in May 1940, the 51st Regiment was left to defend the SOE evacuation at St Valery; though following D-Day the Highlanders were at the forefront of the fighting through France. It is all history: over the last decade the historic regiments have been dismantled, despite widespread protest Highlander: The History of The Legendary Highland Soldier.
