The caber toss is a traditional Scottish athletic event practised at the Scottish Highland Games involving the tossing of a large wooden pole called a caber. It is said to have developed from the need to toss logs across narrow chasms to cross them. In Scotland the caber is usually made from a Larch pine tree. A caber typically is 19 feet 6 inches (5.94 m) tall and weighs 175 pounds (79 kg). The object is not the sheer distance of the throw, but rather to have the caber fall directly away from the thrower after landing. A perfect throw ends with the 'top' end nearest to the thrower and the 'bottom' end pointing exactly away.

Tour Scotland Photograph Crab and Codling East Neuk Of Fife July 22nd

Tour Scotland photograph shot today of a crab and codlings at the harbour in Pittenweem, East Neuk of Fife, Scotland. The cod really needs no introduction, being the one of Scotland's favourite table fish, and the main target of the majority of Scottish sea anglers. The reasons for its continuing popularity are not hard to fathom: it's still fairly common inshore despite the commercial overfishing, it's widespread throughout Scotland during the summer and winter, grows to a decent size, can put up a decent scrap if light tackle tactics can be used, and it tastes good too. While the minimum legal size for cod is 35cm (that's not much over 1lb), most cod anglers will be happier to take home fish of 5 or 6lb and above. Below the 5lb mark, the fish are generally referred to as codling, and make up the mainstay of catches. Crabs are called " Partans " in the East Neuk of Fife.

Tour Scotland Video Battle Scene Pictish Stone Aberlemno

Tour Scotland video of the Battle Scene Pictish Stone in the Churchyard at Aberlemno, Scotland. Battle scene between an army of men with long hair and an army of men wearing helmets. Of all the early historic peoples of Scotland, the Picts capture the popular imagination like no other. Although archaeology is gradually uncovering more information about how they lived, they are still best known for their carved monuments, which offer remarkable testimony to their artistic skills. The symbol stones of the Picts are among the most fascinating and enigmatic groups of early medieval sculpture. The purpose and meaning of the stones and carvings still remain something of a mystery, theories range from their use as personal memorials and testaments of clan membership to records of ancient ceremonies and rituals.

The Stone of Destiny: In Search of the Truth is the first book to explore the reasons behind the theft of the Stone of Scone in 1296 by King Edward I of England and to examine the validity of the myths and legends associated with its origins. It is widely believed that the stone taken to Westminster Abbey and returned to Scotland in 1996 was the Covenant Stone of the Israelites, also known as Jacob's Pillow, which was carried to Spain by the Egyptian Princess Scotia before being moved to Ireland and subsequently to Scotland, and used as the Coronation Seat of the early Scottish kings. The authors examine the political situation between the various kingdoms of Britain and the Church of Rome during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and how very real the threat of another European crusade, like the Albigensian Crusade, must have been felt in Scotland. Also explored are the many theories about the authenticity of the stone now on display in Edinburgh Castle and whether this is the Palladium of Scotland that Edward intended to take, or whether there is another artifact that can make sounder claims to being the genuine Coronation Stone.
