The Kate Kennedy Procession is the main event of the Kate Kennedy Club and the one around which the Club was founded. Each year both Town and Gown assemble to form a crowd of hundreds on the streets of St. Andrews to celebrate the lives and contributions of some of the great men and women of the town and university. The procession has a long history but its organisation by the Kate Kennedy Club has ensured that it is a great tradition in the life of the town, a special day for town and gown alike.

Tour Scotland Photograph Start of Kate Kennedy Procession

Tour Scotland photograph of the start of the Kate Kennedy Procession outside the Quadrangle of St Salvator's College in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. A student portraying Saint Andrew leading the procession from the Quadrangle into North Street, St Andrews. Several legends state that the relics of Andrew were brought by divine guidance from Constantinople to the place where the modern Scottish town of St Andrews stands today. The oldest surviving manuscripts are two: one is among the manuscripts collected by Jean-Baptiste Colbert and willed to Louis XIV of France, now in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, the other is the Harleian Mss in the British Library, London, England. They state that the relics of Andrew were brought by one Regulus to the Pictish king Óengus mac Fergusa. The only historical Regulus, Riagail or Rule, whose name is preserved in the tower of St Rule was an Irish monk expelled from Ireland with Saint Columba. There are good reasons for supposing that the relics were originally in the collection of Acca, bishop of Hexham, who took them into Pictish country when he was driven from Hexham, and founded a see, not, according to tradition, in Galloway, but on the site of St Andrews.

Tour Scotland photograph of the South Door of the Abbey Church in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. Dunfermline Abbey, one of Scotland's most important cultural sites, has received more of Caledonia’s royal dead than any other place in the kingdom, excepting Iona. One of the most notable non-royal names to be associated with the abbey is the northern renaissance poet, Robert Henryson. The tomb of Saint Margaret and Malcolm Canmore, within the ruined walls of the Lady chapel, was restored and enclosed by command of Queen Victoria. Robert the Bruce was buried, in 1329, in the choir, now the site of the present parish church. Bruce’s heart rests in Melrose, but his bones lie in Dunfermline Abbey.

The origins of St Monans Parish Church date back to 875 when St Monan, or possibly one or more of his bones, was buried here and a shrine was established to venerate his memory. In 1346 King David II was wounded by two barbed arrows at the battle of Neville's Cross. One could not be extracted, but miraculously removed itself from his wound after David had made a pilgrimage to the shrine of St Monans. To give thanks he ordered the building of a church on the site.
