Tour Scotland Parish Church Struan Scotland

Tour Scotland Parish Church and Churchyard, Struan, Perthshire, Scotland. Struan is a parish church, of early Christian origin and dedicated to St. Fillan, at the confluence of the Errochty Water and Garry rivers. Many of the medieval chiefs were buried in this church. The church was probably was in the patronage of Clan Robertson in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries but may have been acquired by the Stewart earls of Atholl in the early sixteenth century when the Robertson lands were apprized by the crown for debt. Unlike many other Highland noblemen, the Robertson chiefs refused to 'clear' their estates of their clansmen in favour of the more profitable sheep during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This honourable but financially disadvantageous policy led to the eventual alienation of the entire clan lands by the early 20th century. Only the family vault at Dunalastair is still in the possession of the family of Struan; however, many modern properties have been added to the clan land. The title Baron of Struan is still transferred through Dunalastair.

The Skye Boat Song is a Scottish waltz and folk song recalling the escape of Charles Edward Stewart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, from Uist to the Isle of Skye after his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Stewart escaped in a small boat with the aid of Flora MacDonald disguised as a serving maid. The song is a traditional expression of Jacobitism and its story has also entered Scotland as a national legend.

chorus:

Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing,
Onward! the sailors cry;
Carry the lad that's born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.

Loud the winds howl, loud the waves roar,
Thunderclaps rend the air;
Baffled, our foes stand by the shore,
Follow they will not dare.

chorus

Though the waves leap, soft shall ye sleep,
Ocean's a royal bed.
Rocked in the deep, Flora will keep
Watch by your weary head.

chorus

Many's the lad fought on that day,
Well the Claymore could wield,
When the night came, silently lay
Dead in Culloden's field.

chorus

Burned are their homes, exile and death
Scatter the loyal men;
Yet ere the sword cool in the sheath
Charlie will come again.

I remember the sound of the passing train
As it rolled through the night in the pouring rain
And the touch of a hand and the way she said 'Goodbye'.

And we walked in the sun down the royal mile
Saw the light in her eye and the way she smiled
And she cried in the night and I heard her say 'Don't go'.

What can I do, sweet darlin', I don't want to go away
Looking at you sweet darlin', I know I want to stay
What can I do, sweet darlin'?

In the light of the day I was rolling home
I was thinking of you waiting on your own
And I wanted to call but then something said 'Oh no'.

Yeah but now it's a dream, it's a memory
But I'll never forget what you gave to me
I was lost and alone but you made me feel ok.

What can I do, sweet darlin', I don't want to go away
Looking at you sweet darlin', I know I want to stay
What can I do, sweet darlin'?

I remember the sound of the passing train
As it rolled through the night in the pouring rain
And the touch of a hand and the way she said 'Goodbye'.

What can I do, sweet darlin', I don't want to go away
Looking at you sweet darlin', I know I want to stay
What can I do, sweet darlin'?
