They came at dawn from out the darkness
Swords and torches in their hands
They said it was the chieftains orders
Clear the hillsides and the glens
No more we'd smell the broom and the heather
Share the bannock with our kin
Be laid to rest beside our fathers
It almost broke our hearts and minds
To board the ship, the ship of tears
To board the ship, the ship of tears

We crossed the sea to flee the hunger
Wasted rags of skin and bone
The fields we left were black and barren
A ravaged land no longer home
The coffin ships were filled with mourning
We'd one last look back to the land
The quiet men, the women keening
It almost broke our hearts and minds
To leave the fields. the fields of tears
To leave the fields, the fields of tears

They came in floods in covered wagons
Drove across our ancient lands
They said to scorn our elders wisdom
Take the path their lord commands
They stole our hills, they stole our rivers
The mother earth with whom we're joined
They lead us from our spirit fathers
It almost broke our hearts and minds
To walk the trail, the trail of tears
To walk the trail, the trail of tears

They came in hordes across the desert
Storms of dust that sear the skin
They said they'd come from our oppressor
They would make a meal of him
They said that we would earn our freedom
And come to see their way is right
But still we weep and we are bleeding
They have not won our hearts and minds
We're on the road, the road of tears
We're on the road, the road of tears
It never ends the road of tears, the road of tears,
the road of tears.

The Outer Hebrides is Malcolm MacGregor's second book of landscape photography in Scotland. Here he travels throughout the islands in pursuit of Atlantic light. The photographic journey on the edge of Scotland takes him from the majestic beaches of North Lewis, via the mountainous tops of Harris to the awe-inspiring cliffs on Mingulay in the south. The photographs in this book cover remote mountains, hills, coastline and deserted islands. Additionally he photographs churches, ruined castles, ancient graveyards, fishing vessels, Harris tweed factories and standing stones, bringing a different perspective to the Outer Hebrides. The Isle of Skye occupies an almost mythical place in the minds of many Scots. Romantic castles, magnificent seascapes, the alpine peaks of the Cuillin Ridge, marching pipe bands, scattered white crofters' cottages and a bloody history; the island has all these and more. This book features 40 moderate walks that take in much of this celebrated landscape, but reveal hidden gems too. In spite of its popularity Skye is still rich in undiscovered treasures, from coastal caves and arches, ruined villages cruelly cleared of their inhabitants, to fossilised dinosaur footprints and a rich array of wildlife. Written by Skye residents Paul and Helen Webster, these walks will reveal both the wild and gentler sides of this dramatic landscape. Isle of Skye: 40 Coast and Country Walks (Pocket Mountains).

The visit of King George IV in 1822 prompted a commemorative statue, which can be seen at the junction with Hanover Street.

Tour Scotland Autumn Video River Earn Perthshire

Tour Scotland Autumn video of the River Earn shot from Forteviot Bridge, Perthshire, Scotland. The River Earn leaves Loch Earn at St Fillans and runs east through Strathearn, then east and south, joining the River Tay near Abernethy. The Earn is about 46 miles long. It passes by Comrie, Crieff and Bridge of Earn. The river is fast flowing, with many shoals, and is not navigable, even by small vessels. October 5th Photograph Kinnaird Castle Scotland

October 5th photograph of Kinnaird Castle in Carse of Gowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. Kinnaird was built as a frontier castle to protect the Carse of Gowrie and its people against the Highlanders. It is a royal castle and is reputed to have been built in 1107.

October 5th photograph of Kinnaird Castle in Carse of Gowrie, Perthshire, Scotland. The Kinnaird family lived in the castle from the mid-twelfth century. In 1449, due to a misunderstanding between two hot tempered Scots, involving the death of a member of the Douglas Clan, Kinnaird was besieged by the Douglas Clan, who managed to break in, loot and wreck the castle. Most of the castle had to be rebuilt in 1450. John Kinnaird of that ilk the 15th Laird of Kinnaird, was obliged to sell the family estates of Kinnaird. He resigned the lands and barony of Kinnaird into the hands of the King (James I & VI), who, on 26th March 1618, granted them to John Livingston, a Gentleman of the Kings Bedchamber. The castle passed to the Colvilles, who in turn, passed it to the Threipland family in 1674. After some years of occupancy, Kinnaird was abandoned. In 1854, three ladies took pity on the derelict castle and spent a fortune in repairs. In due course, the place was again bought by the Threiplands, who sold it to the present owner.
