Tour Scotland photograph of a Murray Royal Hospital walled garden in Perth, Scotland. The hospital was founded by James Murray, a labourer who inherited a fortune in 1809 when his half brother drowned in a storm which sank the ship carrying him home from India. It was in his own will that James Murray left two thirds of his estate for purpose of establishing an asylum in Perth.

Tour Scotland Photograph Sign Of The Times

Tour Scotland photograph of a satellite dish on the roof of a thatched cottage in Rait, Perthshire, Scotland. In most of rural Scotland thatch remained the only roofing material available to the bulk of the population in the countryside, in many towns and villages, until the late 1800s. Commercial production of slate began in 1820, and the mobility provided by railways made other materials readily available. Still, the number of thatched properties actually increased in the UK during the mid 1800s as agriculture expanded, but then declined again at the end of the 19th century because of agricultural recession and rural depopulation. Gradually, thatch became a mark of poverty, and the number of thatched properties gradually declined, as did the number of professional thatchers.

Scotland's 'Stone of Destiny' is the most famous symbol of both Scottish nationhood and the British monarchy. Nick Aitchison has produced the first full-length, fully researched and fully illustrated study of its history, mythology and cultural significance.
Having first traced the origin, evolution and function of myths surrounding the Stone and the ancient prophecy that gives the stone its name, he examines the stone itself - its appearance, geology and source - and for the first time reveals the Stone's original function and the origins of its symbolic sanctity. The Stone's much-disputed authenticity is then assessed - with the conclusion that the Stone is the genuine inauguration stone of the Scottish kings seized by Edward I in 1926.

The Stone's historic contexts, first at the Pictish and Scottish royal centre at Scone and subsequently at Westminster Abbey, and its role in royal inauguration and coronation rituals, are then discussed. This includes an analysis of the rich symbolism surrounding the Stone and its changing nature over time. The final chapter attempts to return the Stone to Scotland, from unsuccessful medieval efforts, through its brief but celebrated retrieval in 1950-1, to its restoration and installation in Edinburgh Castle in 1996. Throughout, the importance of the Stone during the Scottish War of Independence is emphasised and the book concludes with a discussion of the Stone's symbolic significance with the creation of the Scottish parliament. August 18th early evening photograph of the Saltire Flag flying at Elcho Castle, Perthshire, Scotland. Consisting of a blue background over which is placed a white representation of an X-shaped cross, the Saltire is one of Scotland's most recognisable symbols.

Tour Scotland Photograph Video Beehive Doocot

Tour Scotland photograph of a Beehive Doocot in Elcho, Perthshire, Scotland. On many Scottish estates a dovecote, or doocot, can be found. It may be disguised as a classical temple, transformed into a cottage ornée or incorporated into a cupola, but many doocots are more humble structures of random rubble with simple dressings that date from medieval times, when pigeons and their eggs were a valuable source of food, while their dung was used for fertiliser and even gunpowder.
