June 12th Photograph River Tay Scotland

June 12th photograph shot at dusk of the River Tay near Dundee, Scotland. Beautiful Silvery Tay. William McGonagall expressed a love of Homeric epithets in his poetry, and for him, just as Dundee was always " Bonnie ", the River Tay was always " Silvery " McGonagall: A Selection.

Recognised the world over as the home of golf, St Andrews Links has borne witness to over 600 years of golfing history. That the game evolved and developed into its final form here has never been in question: St Andrews is the home of the game's most influential ruling body, the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, and it was here in 1764 that today's standard 18 hole round was established when the 22-hole Old Course was reduced. One golf course has now become seven and many of golf's most dramatic moments, affecting the world's most famous players, have occurred here. It has played host to the game's greats, as well as those enthusiastic amateurs for whom the chance to play St Andrews' hallowed turf is a dream come true. As Jack Nicklaus remarked: 'If a golfer is to be remembered, he must win the title at St Andrews.' This celebratory volume of the official history of golf's most important location was written by Tom Jarrett, a caddie, journalist, golfer and author. St ANDREWS LINKS Six Centuries of Golf.

Lifeboat Heroes. The RNLI is at the forefront of saving lives around Britain's coasts. Putting to sea in all weathers, its crews are on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Edward Wake-Walker describes 16 dramatic rescues spanning 200 years in the RNLI's distinguished history. The earliest story is that of Sir William Hillary, founder of the RNLI, who rescued all 17 crew and passengers from the Fortroendet aground in 1827. A more recent account concerns helicopter winch man, Bill Deacon, who died after saving the last ten men from the freighter Green Lily in a hurricane in 1997, and coxswain Hewitt Clark who brought his lifeboat alongside the ship and saved five of her crew. Old Photographs Up Helly Aa Shetland Scotland

Old photograph of Up Helly Aa procession, Shetland, Scotland. The first Viking galley was burned in 1889. At this festival there is a main guizer who is dubbed the "Jarl". The procession culminates in torches being thrown into a replica Viking longship or galley. The event happens all over Shetland, but it is only the Lerwick galley which is not sent seaward. Everywhere else, the galley is sent seabound, in an echo of legendary Viking sea burials.

Old Photograph Beech Hedge Meikleour Scotland

Old photograph of the Beech Hedge, Meikleour, Perthshire, Scotland. Located near Meikleour, alongside the A93 Perth to Blairgowrie Road, the hedge was planted in the autumn of 1745 by Jean Mercer and her husband, Robert Murray Nairne on the Marquess of Lansdowne's Meikleour estate. It is said the hedge grows towards the heavens because the men who planted it were killed at the Battle of Culloden. The hedge is noted in the Guinness World Records as the tallest and longest hedge on earth, reaching one hundred feet in height and 1/3 of a mile in length. The hedge is trimmed once every ten years but remains viewable to visitors all year round.
