Tour Scotland Photograph And Video Tay Railway Bridge

Tour Scotland photograph of the Tay Railway Bridge from Balmerino in Fife, across from Dundee, Scotland. The present structure is the second one this site. From about 1854, there had been plans for a Tay crossing, to replace an early train ferry. The first bridge, opened in 1878, was a single track lattice design, notable for lightness and low cost. Its sudden collapse in a high wind on 28 December 1879 was one of the great engineering disasters of history. Seventy five passengers and crew died,The second bridge is a double track construction of iron and steel, opened in 1887 and still in service.

Scottish Lighthouses. Scotland boasts a landscape of stunning coastlines and awe-inspiring islands. With some of the most dangerous coastal waters in the world, however, such breathtaking scenery comes at a price. Lighthouses have played a significant part in the history of this country, which is so heavily dependent on the sea for its livelihood. Scottish Lighthouses is a beautifully illustrated and insightful tour of 31 magnificent lights, built over the last two centuries to protect ships from the perilous coastline. Because Scotland has led the way in maintaining lighthouse stations, most of the buildings described here are, happily, still both functional and in excellent condition. Scottish Lighthouses.

Recollections of East Fife Fisher-folk. During the early part of the 20th century, fishing still formed one of the main industries in the famous corner of Fife. Belle Patrick spent her first thirty years in Anstruther, and wrote this memoir to put on record the fishing way of life, believing it to be "so independent". Recollections of East Fife Fisher-folk.

Tour Scotland Photograph Video Bridesmaids Scotland

Tour Scotland photograph of Bridesmaids in Perthshire, Scotland. An old tradition in Scotland was the Wedding Walk, a formal march taken by the wedding party to the church. Preceded by a piper or fiddler, the bridegroom leads the maid of honour while the bride walks behind with the best man. After the ceremony, the newlyweds leave the church followed by the best man escorted by the maid of honour. To secure good luck it was traditionally thought that the wedding procession should cross running water twice.

Rosslyn Chapel Revealed is intended for those who wish to understand the Chapel, now restored and re-dedicated, and the many myths which have attached themselves to its unforgettable splendour. It uncovers Rosslyn Chapel's true iconic value and profound spiritual significance. For centuries Rosslyn Chapel has been the subject of ingenious speculation. The Chapel was designed by Sir William Sinclair, in the 1440s. Funds were put in place to support a priest and clergy whose task was to celebrate mass regularly and pray for Sir William and his family in perpetuity. In 1560, however, the Scottish Reformation intervened and the chapel declined. Rosslyn Chapel Revealed.

The statue of the Duke in Parliament Square shows him in the robes of the Order of the Garter, while the bronze panels depict incidents from the Buccleuch family history and scenes from the life of the 5th Duke himself. Buccleuch was born at Dalkeith House, Midlothian, Scotland, the fifth child of seven, and second son of Charles Montagu-Scott, 4th Duke of Buccleuch, and the Honourable Harriet Katherine Townshend, daughter of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney and Elizabeth Powys. When his older brother, George Henry, died at the age of 10 from measles, Walter became heir apparent to the Dukedoms of Buccleuch and Queensberry. He was only thirteen when he succeeded his father to the Dukedoms of Buccleuch and Queensberry in 1819. Buccleuch died in Bowhill, Selkirkshire, in April 1884, aged 77, and was succeeded by his eldest son, William. He was buried in the family crypt of the Buccleuch Memorial Chapel in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Dalkeith, Midlothian. As the family grew they moved to a larger house at 20 Calton Hill. Due to his father's own fame as a sculptor, for much of his early working career he is referred to as John Steel Junior.

Tour Scotland Photograph Unicorn Mercat Cross Edinburgh

Tour Scotland photograph of the Unicorn at the top of the Mercat Cross on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Mercat Cross of Edinburgh stands in Parliament Square next to St Giles' Cathedral, facing the High Street in the Old Town of Edinburgh. As elsewhere in Scotland, important civic announcements were made at the mercat cross. In Edinburgh, royal and parliamentary proclamations that affected all of Scotland were publicly read. The practice of announcing successions to the monarchy and the calling of parliamentary general elections is continued to this day by heralds of the Lord Lyon King of Arms. The Protestant reformer John Knox relates that for one hour and four hours on two separate days in 1565 Sir James Tarbet was tied to the Cross and pelted with eggs for saying the Mass, which had been banned by the Scottish Parliament five years previously. After the surrender of the " Queen's Men " ended the " Lang Siege " of Edinburgh Castle William Kirkcaldy of Grange, his brother James and the two jewellers Mossman and Cokke, who had been minting coins in the Queen's name inside the castle, were hanged at the Cross on 3 August 1573.

Tour Scotland Photograph David Hume Statue

Tour Scotland photograph of the David Hume statue, Royal Mile, Edinburgh, Scotland. David Hume was a Scottish philosopher, historian, economist, and essayist, who is best known today for his highly influential system of radical philosophical empiricism, skepticism, and naturalism. Hume conceived of philosophy as the inductive, experimental science of human nature. Taking the scientific method of the English physicist Sir Isaac Newton as his model and building on the epistemology of the English philosopher John Locke, Hume tried to describe how the mind works in acquiring what is called knowledge. He concluded that no theory of reality is possible; there can be no knowledge of anything beyond experience. Despite the enduring impact of his theory of knowledge, Hume seems to have considered himself chiefly as a moralist.
