Tour Scotland Photograph Invermark Castle

Tour Scotland photograph of Invermark Castle, Glen Esk, Scotland. Invermark Castle was built around 1526 by the Lindsays and was used as a refuge by the locals when Highland caterans or raiders descended on the Glen to steal cattle and whatever else they could find. In 1659, when the Laird bestowed a grant for the reader or schoolmaster, he bound himself and his successors to pay the whole stipend in the event of "a general vastatione of the paroche by Highlanders or otherwise." During one such raid, half the cattle and sheep in the Glen were carried off and five Glenesk men died trying to stop them. The castle was used by young David Lindsay, in 1607, after he had killed Lord Spynie in Edinburgh, after a long-standing quarrel. James Carnegie, Lord Balnamoon was another who sought shelter in Invermark Castle. He hid from government troops there after Culloden.

September 11th photograph of the boat that takes visitors to Loch Leven Castle, Scotland.

September 11th photograph of Loch Leven Castle, Scotland. Loch Leven Castle is a ruined castle on an island in Loch Leven, in the Perth and Kinross region of Scotland. Possibly built around 1300, the castle saw military action during the Wars of Scottish Independence. In the later 14th century the castle was granted to William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, and remained in Douglas hands for the next 300 years. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here in 1567–1568, and forced to abdicate, before escaping with the help of her jailers family. In 1588, the Queen's jailer inherited the title Earl of Morton, and moved away from the castle. It was bought, in 1675, by Sir William Bruce, who used the castle as a focal point in his garden, although it was never again used as a residence.

Tour Scotland Photographs Video The Well Scotlandwell Perthshire

Tour Scotland photograph of The Well at Scotlandwell, Perthshire, Scotland. Spring water from the well, from which this Scottish village gets its name, was thought to cure many diseases. A hospital, established in 1250 by the Red Friars, became a popular destination for pilgrims including Robert the Bruce who visited the village in search of a cure for leprosy. The well was one of several in the area, referred to in old documents as " Fontes Scotiae " or the " Wells of Scotland " As long ago as 84 AD, Roman soldiers marching between their camps at Lochore in Fife and Ardoch in Perthshire may well have stopped to take the waters and rested there. The canopy over the well was built in 1858.

Tour Scotland Photograph Michael Bruce Memorial Portmoak Perthshire

Tour Scotland photograph of the Michael Bruce Memorial, Portmoak Churchyard, Perthshire, Scotland. Memorial stone in the graveyard to Michael Bruce, born 27th of March 1746, died 15th July 1767, author of several of the scripture paraphrases used in Church of Scotland worship. Michael was born at Kinnesswood in the parish of Portmoak, Kinross-shire. His father, Alexander Bruce, was a weaver. Michael was taught to read before he was four years old, and one of his favourite books was a copy of Sir David Lyndsay's works. His attendance at school was often interrupted, because he had to herd cattle on the Lomond Hills in summer, and this early companionship with nature greatly influenced his poetry. A delicate child, he grew up as the pet of his family and friends. He studied Latin and Greek, and at fifteen, when his schooling was completed, a small legacy left to his mother, with some additions from kindly neighbours, enabled him to go to the University of Edinburgh, which he attended during the four winter sessions from 1762. In 1765 he taught during the summer months at Gairney Bridge, receiving about five shillings a year in fees and free board in a pupil's home. He became a divinity student at Kinross, with a Scottish sect known as the Burghers, and in the first summer of his course, in 1766, he was put in charge of a new school at Forest Hill, near Clackmannan, where he led a life marred by poverty, disease and loneliness. There he wrote Lochleven, a poem inspired by the memories of his childhood. He had already been threatened with consumption, and now became seriously ill. During the winter he returned on foot to his father's house, where he wrote his last and finest poem, Elegy written in Spring.
