Tour Scotland Photograph Interior The Frigate Unicorn Dundee

Tour Scotland photograph of the interior The Frigate Unicorn, Victoria Docks, Dundee, Scotland. The classic sailing frigate was a fast and powerful warship, and was one of the most successful and charismatic ship designs of the age. She was built in peacetime at Chatham Dockyard, Kent and launched in 1824. A superstructure was built over her main deck and she was laid up " in ordinary ", serving as a hulk and a depot ship for most of the next 140 years. Her lack of active duty left her timbers well preserved, and in the 1960s steps were initiated to convert her to a museum ship.

Tour Scotland Photograph James Arthur Statue Glasgow

Tour Scotland photograph of the James Arthur statue near Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow, Scotland. James Arthur, born 1819, died 1895, was a local Glasgow businessman. This statue was erected by subscription; among the subscribers were many of his employees. James was born in Paisley, and became a draper there. In 1849 he went into partnership with Hugh Fraser, opening a drapery store in Buchanan Street. In 1856 they relocated their wholesale clothing business to Miller Street, trading as Arthur & Company, and in 1865 the Arthur & Fraser partnership was dissolved, leaving Fraser with the retail business. Arthur remained senior partner in Arthur & Co, which began manufacturing ready made clothing in the 1880s. The business prospered and by the time of his death had three clothing factories and employed over 700 travelling salesmen. In 1847 he married Jane Glen, and he supported her campaign to become Scotland’s first female member of a school board. After Arthur’s death she established the Arthur Fellowship to promote the medical education of women.

Tour Scotland Photograph David Livingstone Statue Glasgow

Tour Scotland photograph of the David Livingstone statue near Glasgow Cathedral, Glasgow, Scotland. A splendid statue of David Livingstone, the famous medical missionary, leaning on a palm tree, below which is a set of discarded leg irons. On the plinth are pictorial reliefs of grateful natives. It was first erected in George Square, Glasgow. Born on March 19, 1813, in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, Scotland, David Livingstone pursued training in medicine and missionary work before moving to Africa in 1841. He crossed the continent from east to west and would ultimately come across many bodies of water previously uncharted by Europeans, including the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls. He was a staunch abolitionist after witnessing the horrors of the African slave trade, and returned to the region twice after his initial voyage. He died on May 1, 1873, in Chief Chitambo's Village, near Lake Bangweulu, North Rhodesia, now Zambia.
