July Photograph Smeaton's Bridge Bridgend Perth Scotland

July photograph of Smeaton's Bridge from Bridgend, Perth, Scotland. Perth Bridge, also known as Smeaton's Bridge spans the River Tay, connecting Perth, on the eastern side of the river, to Bridgend, on its western side. The bridge was completed in October 1771, and the engineer of its construction was John Smeaton, for whom the bridge is named.

Funded by the Earl of Kinnoull, the government, and public subscription, the bridge was put to the test three years after its completion. In February 1774, during a quick thaw, broken ice became wedged under the arches and created a natural dam. Large sections of Perth, including both of its Inches, were flooded. The bridge, however, stood firm. It has survived many subsequent floods, and marks documenting these levels are visible on one of its piers. An increase in traffic resulted in the bridge being widened in 1869 by A.D. Stewart. Its stone parapets were removed, and footpaths projected over iron brackets.

Tour Scotland Photograph Innerpeffray Library Perthshire

Tour Scotland photograph of Innerpeffray Library, near Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland. Innerpeffray Library was the first lending library in Scotland. It is located in the hamlet of Innerpeffray, by the River Earn, three miles southeast of Crieff. The library was founded by David Drummond, 3rd Lord Madertie before 1680, when he made four hundred of his family books available to the public. The library was originally located in the loft of St Mary's Chapel, and moved into a purpose-built library house in 1762. This was built by Robert Hay Drummond, Archbishop of York, and a descendent of Lord Madertie, who also donated his book collection on his death. The library ceased lending in 1968, but remains open to the public several days a week, except over the winter months.

Tour Scotland Photograph Hadrian's Wall Hotbank Crags

Tour Scotland photograph of Hadrian's Wall from Hotbank Crags, near Hexham, Northumberland, England. Hadrian's Wall, Latin: Vallum Aelium, also called the Roman Wall, Picts' Wall, or Vallum Hadriani in Latin, was a defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia, begun in 122 AD in the reign of the emperor Hadrian. It ran from the banks of the River Tyne near the North Sea to the Solway Firth on the Irish Sea, and was the northern limit of the Roman Empire, immediately north of which were the lands of the northern Ancient Britons, including the Picts. It had a stone base and a stone wall. There were milecastles with two turrets in between. There was a fort about every five Roman miles. From north to south, the wall comprised a ditch, wall, military way and vallum, another ditch with adjoining mounds. It is thought the milecastles were staffed with static garrisons, whereas the forts had fighting garrisons of infantry and cavalry. In addition to the wall's defensive military role, its gates may have been customs posts.
